  1. ST 17-1-1 circa 1981.

This is a set of reference data used in training officers at the armor school.  "It reflects the current thought of this school and conforms to published Department of Army doctrine as closely as possible."  It is a list of TOEs the Army was using, or planning to use, at that time.

It does not reflect exactly what every unit was equipped with.  "Remember that all Army units are organized under modified table of organization and equipment (MTOE).  Therefore, to know the manpower and equipment authorizations for a specific unit, it is necessary to consult the authorization document (MTOE) for that unit.  Because organization and equipment varies by time and place, this manual discusses these factors in general terms only, relying on the reader to understand his own equipment and organization well enough to apply the principles in this manual.  (quote from FM 17-95, page ii, 1977.  It applies.)"  As an example, 2/66 Armor, 2nd AD(Fwd), was organized inline with the 1977 ST 17-1-1 until at least the summer of 1983, when I left Germany, and possibly till spring 1985, when they started receiving their first M-1s.

  13. Sort of a pre-cursor to the field manual. It is a small story written about a fictional British junior officer in the Boer War in South Africa. It is alluded to occasionally in the literature on warfare and leadership. Because it such a short, enjoyable, read, it is worth looking at.
