This 1980 report was a part of a broader program of research by the Office of the US Secretary of Defense for the purpose of developing a better understanding of the Soviet style in the conduct of operations and insights as to how to best counter Soviet offensive operations.


Generals Balck and Von Mellenthin are distinguished commanders of forces in battle.  The lessons they draw from their experiences in WWI and WWII against the forces of the Soviet Union.
