  1. No one disputes that. The discussion is about the scout helo and if other assets can perform its role as well as a purpose built helo.
  2. Only 2 squadrons remain and they are scheduled for deactivation at the end of the year.
  3. I was responding to Deja's statement: infantry can laser designate targets in the place of the scout helo. If the helos are grounded, whom are the infantry lasing for?
  4. My arguments still stand. Infantry cannot be everywhere a helo can be, much less every unit be equipped with laser designators. Well, we're going to find out because the DoD spent the last 40 years licking a window trying to procure a replacement. The current scout helo is being retired by the end of the year and the job will fall upon the Apache because there is literary nothing else available.
  5. You don't want to know what the US Navy pays for a ship/sub. A price tag of $1 billion would be considered a great deal.
  6. That's a strawman argument but I'll field it anyway. I bet those both numbers were not determined by the same methodology. The $41 mill is not only misleading, it is not true because you could not buy one for $41 mil or any price because it was still in development in 2002. I'm pretty sure they were not building Apache A models anymore by 2002. They were getting upgraded to the D model or buying new Longbows (AH-64D has the same equipment except Longbow millimeter radar and its HELLFIRE version). What's the price for the D model?.... $65 million. I can build a strawman too Unit cost is worst thing to argue over because you don't know what that number represents. For aircraft, you should look for the "flyaway" cost which is what it cost to manufacture a single aircraft. Even this number is dubious at best. It's debatable if the Apache would have been the superior. It was slower, less maneuverable and had no stealth, but it was better armored, carried more ordinance, and had slightly better high altitude performance. The Comanche and scout helos in general have the harder job. They have find the targets and then laze them so the Apache can destroy them with HELLFIRE launched from behind cover. A lot of the reasons they used to end the program applied to the Apache too. It's no coincidence that AH-64E is capable of controlling drones. I would bet a lot of money that F-35 has this capability too.
  7. That's like saying scout vehicles are unnecessary because the MBT is better. Politics and changing doctrines killed the program. The root of the F-35 problems is the US Marines.
  8. It did but it could stow itself in a structure that ran along the centerline behind the turret.
  9. You didn't say No at least. A lack of comments does not equal a lack or desire. If we took a survey, I doubt there would be many who are actively against it. Moreover, there would be a greater number of people who would support it than the number of people who wouldn't give a flying fluck-a-doo-doo-doo one way or the other. Besides, it's your fault that I am interested in native voice packs in the first place. Waay back when languages expanded in SB, you wanted to know if it were possible to have the crew audio match the nationality of vehicle while everything else remained in english. I think you reached the conclusion it would be too much of a hassle having to move the sound files around whenever you played a scenario with non english vehicles. Good idea, bad implementation. A workable solution is not to copy the sound files into the english folder each time but rather copy the english string files into the folders of the other languages, then use the in-game language setting to switch as needed and avoid all scenarios with a multinational force. While a sound studio is out of the question, I know a sound engineer who can be consulted. Didn't the brits just yell into the mics they had on hand?
  10. Surely you know enough ex-army buddies to make something happen? Even if it doesn't match up with the virtual crew, it will be authentic and educational.
  11. If it were stealth, I'm sure they would have mentioned it as often as possible. At a glance, I'm pretty sure it's not since it has 2 very non-stealthy features: external weapons and a radar transparent canopy.

In case this was never mentioned... To edit things like a quote or pictures in your post, hold down CTRL and right click on it.
  13. You want to begin with these skins instead. DTX1 is the most compressed and saving it again after editing just amplifies its shortcomings. Check out your pics of the closeup of the orange lines on right hull. The green is pixelating pretty bad. Saving it to DTX3 or 5 or a uncompressed format doesn't help either. DTX1 can have an alpha channel also. How the alpha transitions from opaque to transparent plays a big part on which format to use. DTX1 (alpha) and 3 are best when there is a sharp transition. DXT5 is best for gradient transitions like smoke and semi-transparent things like your rotor example. You probably can get away with using DXT3 for decals.
  14. It's also on sale for $85 until the 4.0 release.

You have it because of the announcement feature. Scroll to the top of the page > slide out the menu > the announcement widget should appear above the thread title. I guess we should have told you about this earlier.

Hover your cursor over an person's avatar to see detailed info like join date. It also allows for a small degree of personalizing (yours looks good btw). I think whole member title thing is useless because it's based solely on the number of post one makes. There's a number stat for that already. I think it can be misleading also. There are lurkers out that who have been around a long time and are just as versed in SB-fu as the veterans. Is it accurate to label them as junior members? Having said that... there is something new in the form of little circles under the title which increase in number the more you post. P.S. We finally might get around to adding new smilies that you requested years ago

Yes it's a WIP but don't expect a major change from the current form.

Goto unread content (top right) then click mark all as read (bottom right). It will be more obvious when everything is not marked as unread.
  22. You can the limit HERE from the first vid. It exaggerates the curvature of the horizon to prevent you from seeing further. 5km was a good guess.
