  1. I believe I've read in the documentation that as a result of the ring-sabot design at longer ranges Soviet ammunition suffers greater performance degradation at longer ranges than western ammo. Wouldn't that mean it is more susceptible to aerodynamic destabilisation factors at those kinds of ranges?
  2. Something I've noticed playing the "Hurricane at Fulda (with M1A1s instead of M1A0s)" and "Defense of Kozda" scenarios. Even with 100% gunnery score my allied tanks (and even myself) struggle to hit opposing T-72s in prepared defenses at 2000m in the former scenario. In the Defense of Kozda mission, even in hull-down position the opposing AI has not problems scoring consistent hits on my tank with the first shot at 2500m and over (reliable penetrations are another matter).
  3. I had asked a friend for a source of royalty-free music to use for a streaming channel I was thinking about opening up and he provided me with this site: http://podcast.iu.edu/Portal/PodcastPage.aspx?podid=21639c51-7e7e-440f-aa18-b7ad05fe0e53 I went through some of the mp3s until I got to the one titled "Guitar Hero," where I found an astoundingly familiar tune: http://podcast.iu.edu/upload/UITS/21639c51-7e7e-440f-aa18-b7ad05fe0e53/04%20Guitar%20Hero.mp3 I do hope that this fellow had come to your musician for permission to use your song as part of his remix :cul:
  4. The companies on the flanks seem to die as soon as the scenario starts. Or they spawn as completely inactive.
  5. It would be the HoH pt. 1 and HoH pt. 2 scenarios in the "single" folder in the Offline Scenarios.
  6. Thought I'd get a thread going for some help with some scenarios and hopefully sharpen up my tanking skills. How have you guys managed to complete the Heroes of Hohenfels part I scenario? It seems that taking position in the prepared defenses the platoon immediately sets out for is a sure ticket to death (not to mention the fact that it doesn't give you a very clear line of fire, and more often than not the barrel doesn't even clear the mound of dirt in front of it). I've tried going in forward and going hull-down for a defense in depth, but it seems the AI is real spot-on with its artillery spotting, and you can only realistically kill 3-5 units before you have to reposition before an ICM strike rains down on you. I'm spamming the hell out of my own ICM strikes as well, but that does little to stop the Red Tide when it finally crests. Should I leave the BRDMs and BTRs to the Marders and not-Luchses and save my ammo for the BMPs and T-72s?
  7. Won't the German Leo 2A5 fleet be retired soon in favour of the 2A6 as the Heer completes the draw-down of their armoured forces? Would be a shame to see scenarios involving the Bundeswehr 2A5 rendered anachronistic so soon.
  8. The senior game designer of Company of Heroes 2 said on the forums that if the game was supposed to be a 1:1 representation of war on the Ostfront, then on one of their med-sized maps the Soviets would have 15 mortar tubes rolling around the map (given the resources you have in a match, you're lucky to have three at any given time).
  9. See also the Brigade Franco-Allemande that was founded near the end of the Cold War: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franco-German_Brigade NATO could at least be assured of having far better esprit de corps than their Warsaw Pact counterparts (the non-Soviet armies really only fighting because the Soviets had their boots on their necks, and getting the hand-me-downs to boot).
  10. The 100$ license was easier to swallow when I remembered I spent at least 2 times that on MMO subscription fees.
  11. Mais oui! C'est moi! Finally caved and forked over the $100 for this sim. After spending all those hours in Silent Hunter and Dangerous Waters for my naval sims, Falcon 4.0, F/A-18, and DCS for my combat flight sims, and ArmA for my infantry sims, there was an M1A1 sized hole in my simming experience for too long.
  12. Anybody know if a *German* Leopard 2A6 would simply entail a reskin replacing "Si" and "No" with "Ja" and "Nein" along with the other Spanish labels in the Leopardo 2E interior? I know it's nitpicking, but for scenarios involving you in a 2A6 along with 2A5s it does help with immersion.
  13. Only just now realised there's no modeled interior for the Challenger 2, which is a huge shame. Hopefully that and its firepower issues are resolved with the upcoming update. Still, it's great fun as a tank that just. won't. die. Make a scenario with a platoon advancing on a bunch of T-72Bs in prepared defenses and you get a sense of what it's like to be a Necron army in 40K.
  14. If I may put in a request for the British firing drill, have the commander say when ordering to re-engage: "Looks like that bugger's kettle hasn't brewed just yet."
  15. Do British tankies pretty much use the same phrasing as their counterparts in the US Army (i.e. "Gunner, sabot, tank," "Fire, fire sabot," "Sabot up," "Identify," "On the way," etc)? On that note, can anyone also spell out the German tank chatter for me?
  16. It does seem as if for another tank to have any hope of penetrating the frontal armour it would have to close to a distance where it would be as unhealthy for him as it would be for the Challenger.
  17. Unfortunately couldn't make the weekly TGIF game this weekend due to my roommate who manages our apartment's router being out on work about that time and was too busy to take my texts. Couple things now: 1. Are there any keyboard profiles that are a little bit more ergonomic? My concern is that in altering the default one I may accidentally overwrite an essential command for another vehicle (haven't touched any of the IFVs just yet). 2. Which scenarios are great to start with? Starting out, some of the ones that purportedly last for more than an hour are a bit off-putting, as well as those that give me a battalion level of responsibility (not that I'm afraid of eventually building up my skills to that point). Probably one that's about 30-40 minutes with the other units being fairly autonomous. And a stray observation: It took me a shamefully long time to figure out why aiming with the M1A1 HA was so squirrelly compared to my experience with the Leo 2 and the Challenger: I kept neglecting to dump my previous leads with the palm switch. Immediately after that clicked in my head, the next try on the gunnery range I scored 100 out of 100 with 7.4 secs average
  18. Tried out the Challenger 2 instant action and oooohhh man... I knew the Challenger was tough, but I wasn't expecting it to last as long as I did in that thing. In my first foray, I survived twice as long as my best with the M1A1 HA and probably took at least 3 times the amount of hits (until the end the only real significant damage was to the thermal optics).
  19. I've gathered that. Though I'd like to know if the DM53 fired from the L55 boasts better performance than the CL3143 fired from the same gun or vice versa.
  20. The M1A1 HA certainly has the capacity to amaze even after all these years, in particular, the ballistics computer. I've been constantly drilling myself on the tank range to get the coveted 100 out of 100 gunnery score (seems like it can come down to luck, like getting 10 targets in a row under 1500 meters with sabot loaded). There have been times where my tracking was by my untrained eye relatively sloppy, the lase had multiple returns, and I had the slower HEAT round loaded and I thought to myself "There's no way this is going to hit" before announcing "On the way!" Then you hear those glorious words from the TC "Target! Cease fire!" Right now, my biggest problem is building great situational awareness. I have yet to complete the "Multiple Units" tutorial, which I suppose would be my "graduation" since I inevitably get a 125mm tungsten dart to my Abrams' broadside (it makes me recall a line from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry when he said air-to-air combat isn't chivalrous, knightly fighting so much as it is murder in that most times you get a kill because the other guy never knew you were there). I can definitely see how the Leopard 2 series has the up on the M1A1 in the SA department since you have two sets of eyes scanning for targets (even if one doesn't have a thermal sight) to basically the Abrams' one.
  21. The latest and greatest is always a huge plus for me. For instance, a lot of talk is going on at the Eagle Dynamics forum that the next bird will be the F/A-18C, and to be honest, I'd be a bit disappointed if I had to settle with the legacy Hornet over the one with the avionics, the gas, and the payload to get the job done like the E/F Superhornets. Then again, this is the only real sim that features tanks with smoothbores and composite armour. That said, would of course love to see the M1A2 and the Leo 2A6 with that L55 firing German ammo that laughs at even Kontakt-5. But as a secret Frenchmen, to hear the Leclerc will be making an appearance would make my year (Battle management datalink? 12 RPM Autloader? Sign. Me. Up.)
  22. Got the dongle in the mail and starting out with the M1A1 HA. Though some stray observations: 1. I've read over the Last/First Return tutorial about 5 times and it still kind of lost me. 2. I realised how pampered I've been in ArmA II with having a CITV on the M1A2 TUSK. 3. I developed a practice of counting to two while tracking a target to compute lead, lasing, then waiting another second before firing. 4. Aiming can get a bit squirrelly when using the mouse. I've had a few instances where I traversed the turret pretty damned fast, sent the turret 90+ degrees past where I intended to aim, tried to correct, over-corrected, and overshot my target a few more times before drawing a bead on him. Otherwise having a blast. Hoping to graduate to the Leopard 2 series, the Challenger 2, and the Bradley FVs one I feel totally comfortable with the Abrams. Also, any multiplayer sessions out there that can help break me in? Post-script: Hopefully there are sound mods out there for the non-American tankers. Would love to hear the Limey tankers say: "Re-engage. That bugger's kettle hasn't quite brewed just yet."
  23. Oh boy. Hopefully it shouldn't be too eventful of an experience to refund the upgrade dongle.
  24. So after playing through DCS: A-10C, Naval War: Arctic Circle, Dangerous Waters, and the updated Enemy Engaged, I still had an M1 Abrams-sized hole in my modern military simming experience (sure there's ArmA II, but no one's making big armoured cav scenarios), and so I finally caved and put up 136$ for the license and upgrade (plus shipping and handling). Still waiting on the dongle as of now, but decided to inquire about some essentials: Any big mods out there? Are there certain peripherals (hopefully very affordable) that are as crucial to the experience as a flight stick and TrackIR are to DCS?
