  1. It was a network session, and I don't remember what I selected for reloading the first time. Probably Reload All. (I had fired nothing but sabot - DM53, I think it was - so assumed it wouldn't matter.)

    After that, I did specifically order Reload DM53 to see if it would make a difference.

    The green Reloading message was being spammed heavily - I wish I'd written the exact values down because they'd probably tell us something, I think it was...

    Repeat Reloading message three times, instantaneously

    Nothing for 2-3 seconds

    over and over again.

    I'll get the scenario out and see if I can reproduce this, but of course it probably won't happen when I want it to. :P

    (I was genuinely out of 120 ammo, too. I was in the gunner's hole when the last round fired...there's no mistaking that awful silence where the reloading noises usually are. Also, I was in the external view for quite a while with the turret pointing right at this other tank, about 400m out; if there had been rounds available the AI gunner should have zapped him easily.)

  2. Any idea what could cause a Leopardo 2E to fail to transfer sabot from

    hull to turret?

    Undamaged.

    Stationary, engine off, turret traversed to 5 o'clock.

    18 rounds in the hull - at least, that's what I think 0 | 18 means.

    Sat still for about two minutes, had to displace, sat still for another couple minutes.

    It seemed like the reload kept resetting?? Every second or two it would restate

    "Reloading sabot 0 | 18" but the numbers never shifted.

    The crowning weirdness - their last M1 finds me. He's out of ammo too, or his gun's

    busted or something. We zigzag toward each other, hammering away with the 7.62.

    He gets on the .50 and shoots out one of my tracks, then closes in trying to .50 me

    to death.

    Suddenly I have four DM53 rounds available that weren't there when the engagement began. I haven't even been stationary, I'm hobbling around trying to get my front armor onto him.

    Why wouldn't this tank transfer ammo when it should have, and why did it suddenly transfer

    ammo when it shouldn't have? Bug?

    (It's not certain that it's a bug; the things I don't know about reloading could fill at least a couple pages.)

  3. Welcome aboard! I would recommend going through each of the tutorials at least once. After that there is a scenario called "Tanks" or maybe its "Tanks Pro PE" in the download section of this website, that most folks think is pretty good for learning the basics.

    All true - but don't take "good for learning the basics" to mean "easy". You're up against nine (or is it seven?) bad guys in Tanks, so it's awfully common to get whacked by something you never saw.

    Stay with it, watch the AARs after you get killed and notice where the shot came from. After you die thirty to seventy times, you'll have an idea what dangerous ground looks like. ;)

  4. I should also point out that SB Pro was originally designed for the company team level, not necessarily task forces of several battalions' size.

    We can't help it. We're so good that any fight we touch becomes the Schwerpunkt for everybody within several map sheets.

    It's not a good idea to beat prisoners, for the obvious reason you point out. However, there are some humans for whom I have no compassion whatsoever and if I imagine them being beaten there's no emotional response at all.

    I guess that simplifies to "I'm ok with certain prisoners being beaten, but there are compelling reasons not to beat them".

  6. I read that as the target area, instead of the area of detection. i.e. a box of 20x8km or so. Woops. :) Makes more sense now.

    If precision of k kilometers requires an n-figure grid reference, then n = 4-2 log k and that system would be giving 1.7-figure grids. I'd hate to be the guy who had to try and get funding for that one. ;)

  7. I have no problem with the bomb maker getting his guts stomped out.

    However, that kind of thing going public causes 'hearts and minds' damage for some bloody reason. Sergeants are supposed to understand that 'mission before team before self' stuff.

    I'm pretty surprised they discharged him that way; had I been in his chain I would have tacitly condoned the assault by getting him some kind of PTSD diagnosis and a medical discharge.

  9. Actually, sound-ranging was precise enough by the end of WW1 not only to perform reasonably accurate counterbattery fire, but also to direct the fire and send corrections. Of course it was substantially less accurate than observed fire, but still good enough to use it as a basis for fire missions. From what I remember, quite a number of artillery batteries were at least seriously damaged that way.

    If the sound-ranging could narrow it down even to one grid square, and then you ask one of your own gunners where they would set up x batteries of the enemy's y-inch guns in that area...wouldn't take too much luck.

  10. I replied about the online meeting, but may have done it wrong. I'll be on tonight (late), tomorrow (probably also late) and Friday (probably 2100MST-ish).

    Wish I could help with the maps, but I genuinely can't think of any part of the design process that I'm less talented with. If you made me choose between making the map and doing the mission briefings in Spanish, I'd have to think about it.

    Edit: Bah, the forum's truncating the link. Anyway, it has my user id and a unique identifier in it.

    Mine also has (url) tags around it so it serves as a link to the 29AR website, which you might consider anything from a nice touch to a nefarious trap.

    All three are 60px high, and even the biggest file is a svelte 6.95kB. If you come up with other cool riffs on the design, let me know. :D

  12. They might be disappointing - I imagine thumb-sized holes on both walls and little else. To get dramatic after-armor effect, you need armor massive enough that it causes the penetrator to shatter and dump a lot of energy.

    For a lower-bound example, picture M829A3 going through your crew tent - the tent wouldn't turn into a meat grinder. You'd hear a tiny sonic boom/snap but to the penetrator it's scarcely different from plowing through air. :)

    (I'm not deliberately avoiding the question, though it might seem like it. The only damage I've seen first hand was a cutaway steel block at the armor school which had been shot with a tungsten penetrator, and a rusted-out M113 on one of the Wainwright ranges. The M113 had been there for years and was swiss cheese on the near and far sides, implying that Leopard 1 rounds were blowing clean through it.)
