I remember seeing a reference somewhere to teh ability of steelbeasts to have modified vehicles, eg varying armor values. Is this possible?

No, must have been a different game. It's never been possible, and I'll be damned if we will ever allow people to fiddle with these fundamental data. The integrity of the technical and tactical model is of prime concern for us since manipulations here may cause really bad trouble, especially in multiplayer, but also for the balance of all single player scenarios.

I understand the issue of play balance, but for the 'What If" factor, I think it would be interesting. Perhaps a server side control of the units armor values would help control the issue of cheating. I'm actually more interested in 'testing' various things such as an effective shtora <sp> system, adding reactive armor to an M1 or other tank, etc.
While play balance and authenticity are laudable, and features I love in steel beasts, it would be interesting to play with them a little.

I agree that it would be interesting. And it's a long-term idea. However, we must get the fundamentals right first, and that means to concentrate on the new engine with night combat and stuff like that. Once that we have a complete world model that works just fine, and once that we have closed the other gaping holes, we can start working on such a non-essential feature.
We must set priorities, and this one isn't.

Working with software development and partner/customer relations every day, I must say that Ssnake has a good point here. Let us get the fundamentals right, before we start improvising.
Looking forward to SB2.

I agree, why would you want to change the armor ect, this is a simulation, and therefore it should be as realistic as it can be. If we could cheat in combat then I wouldnt have a problem cheating in the game. Just leave well enough alone and learn to win without cheats.

In my opinion, there is no place for such a feature in Steel Beasts. What could it possibly achieve, aside from a couple of hours of amusing yourself with making a super tank? I see absolutely no point to it.

I see absolutely no point to it. I do, and that is analysing tactics with or against a certain tank type that is not part of the (limited) selection in SB's motor pool. While we are committed to expand the selection of vehicles for SB in the long run, there is no way we could enter about every armored vehicle into it. You could try to find out "what if" questions; after all, our assumptions of armor protection levels are best guesses based on publicly available data.
While we are confident that this method is good enough for the average tactical training, gunnery training, and plainly having fun, it may not be enough for a more scholarly approach to use SB as a simple tool for military (history) analyses.

I see your point, although this would be of very limited use in the consumer version.
Are there any plans to further model the current tanks in SB? I mean more complex gunnery procedure, like entering various data into the ballistic computer, MRS updating etc?
Also, will you implement contrast, focus and other adjustments for the GPS/TIS, since SB2 is going to be 3D accelerated?

As usual I will not comment SB2 features before due time. :)
