View Full Version : Possible for SB?

I know this has probably been kicked around before but, is it possible than SB could be played by using a dedicated server? I have looked at a couple of different web sites and checked out the prices for this service, and the question is. Does the SB community have enough interest and numbers for this to happen?

Imagine if you would playing SB2 with the larger maps and better graphics, along side 10 to 15 other SBer's. I know there are a lot of intangibles that go along with this that I don't have any concept of, but it would be great.

What do you fellow SBer's think?

As I recall it's been suggested, but they don't intend to do it with SB2. We'll still be doing peer-to-peer, albeit with a bit of streamlining so we don't have to go through the horrifying ordeal of jotting down and then typing an IP number.

Its possible, and I kicked around this idea a few times already. The trouble would be a matter of who gets to control it and when. I'd be happy to put up $10 a month for something like that, but I don't have the time or inclination to do all the money collection/billing.

The host computer could be controlled by a remote control, and we could modify scenarios to add a medic vehicle for the "host" computer to stay in and not interfere with the battle. It would be really cool, I think we could host up to 20 or 30 people that way.

I have some questions then. When SB2 does come out, how much effect will the increased graphics have on playing peer to peer games? Even now we have problems with lag and players dropping, I can only imagine this will get worse once SB2 comes out. Playing single player is fine, but the most fun I have is being able to compete against other SBer's. I just hope online play will not be hindered because of this.

:?:
The only way I know that we will be able to play online games with a server is with Esim's blessing. What would need to be done to set up a independent server, so that everyone could play SB on a more stable platfrom? Or, what would it take to prove to Esim that SB2 is a deserving of play with an online server? Worse comes to worse, I believe players would be willing to pay a nominal fee to play this way.

I wouldnt think the graphics will have any affect on lag.

It would have to be a unsanctioned server machine, run and paid for by mp players. In the past, esim has said they dont have the resources to pay for a dedicated server.

I hope your right.

I would like to think that the SB community could put this thing together, but it depends upon how much they are interested in doing this. If not I guess that its just another wish to be put on the SB2 list. Another dream of the blue turtles. :casstet:

No effect at all as the datas send are not graphics at all .
YOUR pc does the graphics.

Putting that aside, I would still like to see SB and SB2 on a grand scale. Rodents beware its time to make a HUGE offering!

A final decision about the networking issue has not been made yet, and would to some degree depend on the publisher's preferences. We just didn't touch that part of the code yet since there are more important things to work on at this point. Having said that, it's just too early to make a final statement how multiplayer will be organized in SB2.

I guess that is all I can really ask for. For you folks working on SB2, press on! My tirade on this subject is officially over (for now).
