Fix for SB 2

It would be nice when your units cross a bridge, narrow strip of land that the vehicles would not attempt to wade in water deeper than their limit. It’s one thing to have them stall when purposefully fording, but it is frustrating to find that you have just lost two tanks because they tried to maintain formation, rather than use the crossing. Thanks

P.S.

Can units do self repair? I seem to notice that vehicles with minor damage (tracks), gain mobility again after being left alone for a while. Is this true?

As far as I know there are two "fixable" types of damage.

If you shut down the engine on a vehicle, the crew will start repairing a damaged track. In my experience the repair takes 20-40 minutes. Before doing this, use your good track (you didn't lose both at once, did you?) to get your front armor facing in a good direction, and pray nobody decides to call arty on you.

Stabilization "damage"...isn't really damage. It occurs when you're jolted by an incoming round and the tank's gyroscopes are knocked out of alignment, causing the computer to get conflicting readings and disable your stab system. Eventually (5-15 minutes?) the gyros will spin back up and realign themselves, and the Stabilization warning will vanish. At that point, assuming your computer is still working, you can switch back to Normal mode and enjoy stabilized gunnery once again.

PS: Is it individual vehicles that are going swimming on you? 'Cause if you send a platoon across a bridge, you have to make sure they're in Column formation, and that there's enough room before the bridge for them to actually get into Column before reaching the bridge...

We expect some improvements with the water related behavior.

any chance that the infantry will trade in their walk-on-water prophet abilities and instead be bulletproof? I swear the REDfor always owns my grunts in an equal fight.

I would bet that infantry will be more difficult to contend with this next time around. Regardless of improvements to the AI model, by the preview screenshots it looks as though the addition of new foliage types will provide more camouflage for the grunts. Maligned as a vehicle simulator, OpFlash's large variety of vegetation really opens that game up to ambushes by opposing troops vs other troops and vs vehicles. A single mid-size types of trees or large bush in OPF could conceal just about anything lurking in the vicinity; by contrast SB1 trees allowed considerable viewing area so that even a unit hiding among them were exposed unless they were hiding several tree lines deep.

Anyway, it's going to be a great show if this trend in SB2 continues. I anticipate the tense action in swinging a Bradley platoon through a grove searching out crunchies sporting a few RPGs.

With the topic of this thread being SB2, does that mean SB2 is on the shelves or at a web site for purchase ? ... or is their a definite date of release ? I've been out of touch ... working like a mad man lately with no time for much of anything. No food, no drink, no sex :o ... uhhh ... I mean no sleep.

also ... I just registered for this new forum and I know this isn't the place to ask but ... isss annyythhinnggg beeeingg donnnne abooouutt thhee slllloooww loooad timmmmes ?

not complaining ... just asking ... you know I'm just a curious hank

best regards and hoping to get back in the swing soon ... hopfully with SB2.

thanks

Look at the grass on these pics! Isnt this something for the clean golf-greens in the SB2 screens? Seriously, this would be an excellent feature in SB2 to enhance combat realism. You would get harder to spot when your tank looks over a hill-top. And infantry would get good cover in the high grass (hard to see that is). Wouldnt this be a piece of cake for Al when he can generate hundreds of 3D-trees, the grass after all is (and should be) only simple 2D-bitmaps.

Of course, it would be easier to handle shell craters and track marks if they instead implement individual blades of grass. :D

No. 1 big difference:

Turn - based vs. Real Time (or do you play SB in pause mode?)

Hi,

Those screenshots are great, but they are too big!

Theres a way to resize images when you link to them:

(img=200x200)http://www.php.net/gifs/php_logo.gif(/img) (Resized Image)

replace ( with brackets.

Thanks,

Sean

The grass looks really cool.

Please keep in mind that whatever you get to see in previews before the end of the year will not represent the real looks of SB2. With the exception of four vehicle models and some trees and the textures themselves, almost every part of the artwork is preliminary and will be replaced later.

Thanks guys,
Could never get into the old turn based stuff, just seems a bizzare way to conduct a war :)
Be nice to see some graphics like that in a real time one though.

I checked out the CMBB demo yesterday. That game has the most eye-candy I ever seen for a turn-based strategy game LOL :D ! I can’t believe that they didn’t do it realtime with a pause-button (to give time for orders) instead. And the computer "thinks" way to long to resolve his move, that was really making me bored.

But the graphics was well done. The tracks on the tanks moves pretty much like the real ones, so when the tank turns right only the left track is moving. Hope I´ll see something like this in SB2! Yeah, I know its on the List.. :)

Which is precisely the reason why it is turn based. They have to crunch a lot of numbers to make the computer come up with at least a minimum challenge.

The real strength of Combat Mission always has been the PBEM - play by email vs. a human opponent.

Well, as I'm sure you know, everthing's relative. I'll relate it to the old forum. Its taking about twice the time to move from one screen to another as on the old site. I'm on Cable at home and I think we have a T1 here at work. Its the same on both.

But, forget I asked. I'm not complaining about it again. :casstet: Its really not a problem. I was just asking.

And thanks for the speedy response SSnake. I'll be in sticthes till SB2 hits the shelves. Bring on the Zoloft and Demerol.

I've played both SB and Combat Mission (pics from above are from Combat Mission 2) and it seems they are both real similiar. It would seem to me that anyone who plays SB should play Combat Mission.

Now i'm not sure why they feel so similiar to each other, since they look really different and there is no 1st person point of view in CM.

Ssnake
10-24-2002, 01:10 PM
SB and CM may appear similar because the main aspect of their gameplay is identical - combined arms tactical combat. Which of course applies to many other games as well - e.g. Starcraft, TacOps, Command & Conquer. They may be set in a fantasy environment, but essentially it is all about assets that have individual strengths and weaknesses, and only their clever combination (hence the term combined arms) results in a success against the competing force.

Cpt_Grogg

Have you guys considered the ability for multiple gamestyles? I know SB is a simulator that is suppose to be as real as possible and of course it should stay that way. But once in a while a game of “capture the flag” or holding bases to count down points like in Battlefield 1942 etc where you respawn could be fun. Would that work? Can it be built into the scenario-editor to make these kind of things?

Olympian

Two more, but I'm sure that they are probably already under scrutiny:

1) As it is now, the 'sweet spot' on unit icons and routes are kind of difficult to engage, especially at just that extra tense moment when a lot is happening. It sometimes presses me into the notion that clicking harder on them with my teeth clenched and a primitive grunt is required for activation. At the same time, closely placed together routes make selecting the prefered one out of the bunch without activating the wrong one somewhat difficult.

2) Ssnake already mentioned specialist troops. Does this address the magical portable AT weapon that gets automatically passed on to the next surviving grunt when the previous one holding it is killed?
