Do you have a firewall of any kind?

Is there a router anywhere between your computer and the internet?

There is a router.

As far as I know no firewall...

Dare I assume you've read the following from the FAQ?

What port forwarding data do I need to be aware of when connecting to games through a router?

These are the ports that DX uses in the game. Follow the link.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q240429

If the Host of the game will set a port to use DX will use that port for the game.

You just need to log into the game with the right Ip and port that the host has given you.

I can not connect to games and my system configuration includes a router. What can I do to join games without changing my config.?

You have to change your configuration so other SB multi-players can see you as your pc is hiding behind the router.

Most routers need to be set up to allow multi-player games to take place properly. The easiest way to do this is locate the routers DMZ Host which when enable will allow the pc you are using a unrestricted access to the internet and other SB multi-players.

If you have additional questions post in the form but you must know the make & model of your router.

I have purchased a router and I get an error when attempting to connect to games. What am I missing?

You need to read your router's manual to find out how to enable DMZ Host as your router is hiding your PC & SB from other SB players.

Note that some routers will let you join MP games but will not let you act as a MP Host.

A work around but defeats the purpose of buying a router is disconnect the router when you want to Host SB MP games.

another problem might be the ports the host is using.
i, for example, can join only hosts that use "small-number" ports (22, for example). my provider blocks "higher" ports.

Sean, Oh portmaster! maybe that should be added to the FAQs along with a more technical description?
