View Full Version : An odd moment during 'Attack on Roadstown"

I've been working away through the scenarios that came with the game. Having lots of fun, and dying rather alot too.

I played through this, and (despite rather embarrasingly losing all but two M1's against some evil T-72's and BMP's) I got an undamaged tank to a depression far north of the map where some tanks were reported. I slowly edged up to the position, and saw the turrets of about six AFV's, with infantry. They turned out to be T-80's. However, when I hopped into the gunner's seat, the TC duly pointed the tube at the closest one, but it was obscured by terrain. and was only about 400yds away. Around about this time, some infantry I'd missed about 1500yds to the west put an ATGM in the tank, knocking out the hydraulics, LRF, and stabilisation. Luckily, this group was engaged by a platoon of M113s that were following well behind me.

I switched to manual, edged forward and engaged all of the T-80's (frantically tapping away at the arrow keys :) ), hull down, and all but one ignored me! The only tank that made an effort to engage did so with the .50 mounted on the turret. At no point did any of them try and maneuver for a shot. I thought this was quite strange, as usually the AI is pretty damned on-the-spot once they see you.

Did I just happen to get into a position where they couldn't 'see' me?

P.S. Really enjoying some of the more complex scenarios now I'm not so intimidated by the game.

They may have also been turret down and weren't moving for some reason (hold)? When one sees you pretty much the rest do to.

I fight 99% of the time from the TCs position. The AI makes a pretty good gunner, but can be a bonehead TC and you wind up fighting with it for control of the turret. If I want to take a shot, I can do it from the override, but most of the time I turn it over to the gunner and either get up to look around or go to the map to direct other units.
About the only time I do drop down to the GNRs seat is to have the .50 cal reloaded or have to shoot from the GAS.

Hope that helps

I had the exact same thing happen to me (although ICM had already taken out a couple of the T-80s). They completely ignored me, might be set to blind.

btw, how DO you reload the cal50?

Go to the Gunner's or the external position (or to another tank I suppose) when the CWS is out of rounds. You will hear the aural que of the TC openning the .50 cover and fiddle around with the new ammo.

I can see I'll have to play through the mission again. It would be curious if they are 'blind'; one T-80 certainly had a good go at me with the 12.7mm.

I'm wondering if their location is causing them visibility problems. The infantry units that were with them advanced quite a distance to hit me, when they apparently looked as if they could do so from their depressed position.

Simplest explanation - their TCs saw you, but they had other targets to their front and decided to deal with those first. Or they had infantry to their front 3300m away, and were determined to deal with those first.

Is that a possibility?
