...
My question is.. ever since I replaced my HD and reloaded everything, including all updated drivers for turtle beach sounds and Voodo 3 graphics, with DX 8.0, which if I run the Diax program..says I have 8.2 dx.. I have had some problems with sounds, and game play.. I wonder if DX 9.0 will improve this or make it worse for Windows 98 LE and the SB game.. any thoughts.. ?
No idea how it actually affects things right now but you can bet soon you'll be seeing REQUIRES DX 9 on things =)

Careful.
Just installed Dx9 and now Americas Army game won't work. It tells me my Dx is not up to date, points me to a download to fix the problem with..........Dx9!

Greetings
Ref. upgrading any DX * , you will have to uninstall the previous version before upgrading to DX9. The problem with DX8.1 is it can not be uninstalled as it incorperates itself into windows. There is a program that disables or uninstall's the DX lockout and allow's for an upgrade. Don't have the link right now but someone out there can post the link.
Hope this help's some.
Ps: the reason for most problem's upgrading is that not all the old driver's from previous version's are overwritten.
All for now.............. 9erRed out.

I had trouble once long ago when I DL'ed an earlier version of DX... I forget what it was now but the lesson I learned at that time is: If it ain't broke, don't fix it. :casstet: I won't DL DX9 until I get a program that requires me to do it. ;) Then I will hold my breath and cross my fingers! :D

Don't install the latest version of DirectX until you have to. There are no DX9 games out yet, consequently there is no need to install it. Let the early adopters find out the troublespots, then MS will release a patched version named DirectX 9.0A in a ludicrous attempt to hide that once again the initial release was buggy. Not that anyone except the most naive people would expect anything different, so they couldn't ruin their reputation by open admittance anyway, but.... well, you get the point. ;)

I have had it installed since yesterday and no problems yet.. Americas army plays fine and the one I really care about >>SteelBeasts<<< Has no problems with it.. I think my FPS has increased a little from it.

Used Dx uninstaller found here. http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html
Installed Dx9 but America's Army still won't run. Gone back to Dx8.1 and the problems gone. BTW, SB ran fine with Dx9 which I suppose is the main thing.

I think my FPS has increased a little from it.
It did give me that impression too. I think some 5 fps. No problem so far with SB and Ghost Recon. Still no J/S hehe :casstet:

Feedback from UseNet is mixed. Some say it's unstable, some that it's helped eliminate CTD's with a certain game, some that it has improved performance (that's what I was looking for - for example on my system when I went from DX7 to DX8 there was a very noticable improvement in FPS in a number of games that I play) and others that they notice no change.
FWIW I believe I will wait for the 9.0A version for now.
However unless MS has changed something with DX9 it is not necessary to uninstall DX8 to install DX9. In fact uninstalling DX can cause big problems if the third party uninstaller that is used isn't programmed absolutely 100% correctly.
DX becomes a part of the OS and is not meant to ever be uninstalled which is why you better be damn sure you want or need it before installing it.
