first post. just wanted to poke my head out of the turret and show myself. I just ordered sbgold, because children damged my sb disc and i have a new compooter. i have only gone thru some of the gunnery training, and to be honest this looks very intimidating, not unlike AIT at the Knox! i hope to keep a simple and steady learning curve. this is a diferent type of ballistic computer. enough bs, i realy just need some advice. where to start and do you all prefer a joystick and what type. seems it would simulate the cadillacs well. i hope i can improve off-line enough to join y'all in on line combat someday. any more hints for a newbie would be appreciated.

Welcome cavgunner! I too am new to SB, only got my copy a few weeks ago. I don't use a joystick as I have a Cougar and it's too heavy for SB, I just use a mouse, it's not too bad although a bit awkward because you can't remap keys or buttons.

I recommend reading the Newbie Anti-Frustration Kit (link on the left of this page under "Online Play"). I have played in a couple of the TGIF games (Friday night US time, Saturday afternoon Australia time) and they are a blast, even though I get killed a lot.

thanks for the hint, 33, i have read some of the AFK- makes good sense- i kinda hate my default avitar but that thing is a pretty good representation of my status so i will stick with it until i find a good one and how to import and use it.

hiya - and welcome. You already have the AFK under your belt? Great. Try out the SP sce's mentioned therein and then come on in... the water's fine!!!

If you need avvy help, there are oodles of helpers, plus lots of info in the archives, plus a site admin that loves to answer that question over and over and over.... right Sean? (hint - I was the 10,312th person to ask him some 18 months ago or so). Tee hee.

Welcome Cavgunner. You will REALLY enjoy this. Once you get online, it will rip this sim wide open - a very small but dedicated worldwide community.

I prefer using a digital optical mouse for gunnery - it works for me: 100% 4.1 sec avg.

Yes, welcome aboard CG..

Many like B-6 use the mouse and swear by it, but I never could get the feel, let alone use other hand to drive and jump to map, TC, Gunner, etc.. and work mouse during battle.. so I opted for joystick..

No Caddilacs, so my suggestion is what many of us use (a joystick). Many of us use the Logitech, Extreme PRO 12 button.. (NO feedback)

Good, smooth spring, can profile the buttons as desired, the stick itself cost around 35 dollars.. and do get a store 1 or 2 yrs extended warranty.. for 5 dollars extra.. that way, if, as some have done, you get slow horizontal movement to the right, take it back and get a new one, hopefully one that is put together right.. (so far mine has lasted thru many battles) and it will only cost you another 5 dollars for another extended warranty on that new stick. (worth it everytime..)

The joystick frees up your left hand to work the keyboard for driving and jumping.. IMO

Just practice up in SP mode, ie gunning, mapping, LOS ..map.. routing and setting defend orders.. and learn to mark many BP's (Battle Positions) for wide coverage and OW..(Over Watch) and split the units up once game starts and re-route others to other set BP's.. this is a must in MP..

Other than that, when your rdy to give it a go, come to SB chat, and go for a MP battle and Learn and yes, you will Burn, but it is the best teacher.. Bar none..

And as said above, take advantage of the "Anti Frustration Kit".. just find it in upper left hand column of Forum and clk on it..

Ya might also want to buy a cheap (they work great) single ear/boom mic for TS (Team Speak) as it is also a great way to talk and learn, and is used alot by many of us..

In the game, some do, some don't.. as I don't for both a lag issue, and from what I have "heard" from observing battles thru TS, too many people step over others talking and is basically wasting time.. and accomplishing little, as opposed to quick type messages that are seen and read/heard by most.. IMO.

But as always.. it's the individuals call..

Cya Soon..

1. thanks for the input. starting from scratch w/Gold today.

2. p.s. what is a signature, is it a quip, quote or saying that goes w/profile? how do i make it work/ CG
...

1. Make sure when you install Gold CD.. that when you come to the "options".. there should be around 3 of them.. you will see "ok" to the right of each.. but on the "height/map" option, move your cursor to the far "left" of that option and either rt clk or lft clk and a "check-mark" will appear*

*This is a must for all online MP in regards to maps.. and if you didn't do it, its ok, you can just re-install over exsisting program.. that way you don't lose any scores, downloads, nothing.. and you can correct the situation/problem.

2. Signature is like what I have at bottom of all my post.. ~ Fate is the Hunter ~

You go into "Profile" and add it in signature box.. and then if ya want to get rid of teeth, or just go see the dentist...LOL, just go to bottom of "Profile" and clk on "show gallery" and pick an avatar that is not a "personal one" of others.. such as many of the tank pictures, and many of the gifs of other stuff.. and hit "submit" and you got the best of both worlds.. until you find an avatar that you want to download into the gallery and then re-apply it..

You'll have to wait on a responce to do that (DL of Gif avatar) as I don't know the steps either.. other than Sean helped me out with mine..
