So where is this "List" for SB2? someone has it in their head or something -- let's start "the list"

Vice permitting some of the more carnivorous and acerbic members of our community to allow you to dangle, I will simply explain that the LIST is rather like a unicorn. It has unimaginable power, everyone knows something about it or what it should be like, and none have even seen it, and lived to confirm it.

Ssnake, if he was talking, and he isn't, might say , "Nicht drängeln!", which is German for Bugger Off! More likely, as the most favored suspect keeper of the LIST, he would provide us with a comment like, "If there was a list, and I am not saying that there is, then I wouldn't be able to comment on it."

In any case, SBPro is far enough along, that we are waiting to see what is available prior to demanding more stuff. I am reasonably sure that there are a couple threads on what we can expect in the retail version come this winter. Someone with greater ability on our search engine is invited to post a link here. HH is usually pretty good about it. However, be of stout heart and good cheer Morgan - like your namesake, the good 'Captain', we will await the delivery of SB2 together.

Quiet!

Do you hear that sound?!

It's the sound of millions of rodents across the country side, crying out in terror at the ungodly sacrifice that must now be made to appease the list.
There will be many a mourning squirrel's nest tonight.

I scoff at Rat's feable attempt to save morgan from the wrath of the list! Everyone knows that only a sacrifice can stave off its powers.

But the rat would have us all devoured to save his kind! :mad2:
Nay, nay, I say! The list must be appeased. There will be blood tonight!

Infidel !
Do not question The_list, for it is all that is, and all that shall be.
By the tongues of a thousand squirrels, do not bring shame upon your avatar by questioning The_List !
Many have suffered for their inquisitiveness, but by the decree of his eminence, AL OwenMar, your simple existance shall be allowed to prosper and go unpunished.
All hail, his eminence !
For it is only by his mercy that you may one day learn of The_List, and all the wonders that lie therein.
Do not question He of the forked tongue, for you will learn nothing from him that he does not wish you to know.
His eminence will look unfavorably upon you should you continue your quest, for this is knowledge that an infidel cannot grasp.

You have been warned !

Is that the sword off the Saudi flag, that normally has "God is great" written beside it?

m1a1vha
05-03-2004, 06:31 PM
it really does look like the Saudi sword on the flag, but they have another design for it too. this seems to be the new sword. the iraqi and Taliban-Afgan flags have "God is great". the Saudi flag has more words on it. come to think of it, the symbol on the Iranian flag does have "Allah" on it, too.

The Saudi sword is more scimitar-/cutlass-esque, going from memory, and is facing the other way. The writing is contained between the span from hilt to tip.

...the LIST is rather like a unicorn...

In that it's only accessible/controllable by virgin women? If you grind up the List and make it into a powder, then drink it, is immortality bestowed upon you?

The Saudi sword points left, according to http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/flags/sa-flag.html - and above it is Islam's John 3:16 - "There is no god but God, and Muhammed is his prophet".

The Iranian flag says "God is great" 22 times along the color borders.

Interestingly, Iraq's old flag had "God is great" fitted in between the stars...but it was only added in January 1991 when Saddam was trying to be the new Saladin of the arab world.

Afghanistan's flag has the same inscription. It's sufficiently common to have its own designation (the Shahada); it reads La allah illa Allah, Muhammed rasulu Allah, literally "No deity but Allah, and Muhammed Allah's messenger".

As I thought. Well, I don't think I will be getting SB2! I am tired of chasing games with ever more hardware. The jump from SB to SB2 appears to be too large (don't really know because there is no LIST to check it out). It will probably not run on my laptops (i am not going to be buying anymore for a while) and I have several PII's that SB runs on fine, and I cannot afford to upgrade my whole home network just for SB2 on lan games. I have no interest in higher res, or 3d graphics, or cooler sound effects. I only care about being able to have many more drivable and controllable vehicles. SO, I guess when SB2 comes out, it means I will no longer have anyone to play with or against...........

"As I thought. Well, I don't think I will be getting SB2! I am tired of chasing games with ever more hardware."

Such is life playing new games.

"The jump from SB to SB2 appears to be too large (don't really know because there is no LIST to check it out)."

The FAQ pretty much says the min requirments for it. http://www.steelbeasts.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=22#62

" It will probably not run on my laptops (i am not going to be buying anymore for a while) and I have several PII's that SB runs on fine, and I cannot afford to upgrade my whole home network just for SB2 on lan games."

Well, you certainly wouldn't have to upgrade your network. If SB netcode is good enough to run on it, then SB2's will only be more efficient.

"I have no interest in higher res, or 3d graphics, or cooler sound effects."

Well, you might be able to run the game at 640x480 in 16 bit with textures at a bare minimum, etc. etc. it would look like crap (SB), but hey you'd have what you want. It may not run without hardware T&L though.....I don't know.

" I only care about being able to have many more drivable and controllable vehicles. SO, I guess when SB2 comes out, it means I will no longer have anyone to play with or against..........."

There may be some multiplayer compatability between SB2 and SB....I'm not really sure on this, I kind of doubt it. You certainly would have to be using the same vehicles at any rate.

morgan

you don't get it -- I am tired of constantly upgrading machines to keep up withthe "next" game -- I am not goign to replace or upgrade parts until the old ones die anymore.

PS-SCUD
05-07-2004, 05:17 AM
Right, sorry you feel that way.

Nobody likes having to spend a bunch of money to upgrade their system, but most people consider the advances in graphics, AI, sound, game world complexity, and physics realism to be worth it.

SB wants to be as realistic a tank sim as it can be, as such, it needs to improve all of the above categories, but once it does so, it unfortunately, requires more beefy hardware to run it.

Unless you expect Al to get out his Assembler, and right super optimized code specifically written for your machine.

Morgan.. I have a 1999 PC from dell, with 500mkz processor, P-3, Voodoo 3 G-card, and Turtle Beach Sound..

It plays SB1 fine.. graphics is clear to me, sound is outstanding, in that I still jump out of my chair many times when I have been killed over 2000 times, and the effects are still heart pounding shockers.. lol

As far as changing your PC for Sb2.. can only tell ya that, by the time it "really" comes out, you will have 8 months, minimum, from right now, till that event, if not longer..

As you know, PC's and Sound and Graphic cards will fluctuate in prices.. up and down, along with total PC systems with (what is really important) 2.5 ghz processors P-4 or higher by then, those systems can be as low as around 500 dollars, and if one builds his own, cut that price in half IMHO, and that is what ya will need, not only for SB2, but many of the current games that are on the shelves as I type.. and new ones to come.

I know, I bought 2 new games sometime back, and both won't run on my PC due to the small P-3 processor..

Just take comfort in the knowledge that many of us have been playing SB1 since 1999, and still love it and can't get enough of MP.. and SP for practice..

Given that shooters like "Far Cry" demand a 3 GHz PC with the very latest generation of 3D accelerator cards, and 512 MBytes of RAM, I think that Steel Beasts 2 will actually be a game with comparatively moderate hardware requirements by the time it comes out. Nevertheless we know that not everyone will be able to run it on their machines, but that's a price that we're willing to pay because we think that the new technology offers more for us than just embellished looks.

PS-SCUD
05-11-2004, 03:44 PM
Right. It's not just graphics that require more computing power....

AI, physics simulation, etc. also do.

DrDevice
05-11-2004, 03:48 PM
The other note is that we are talking about how many YEARS between releases? This is hardly a situation of changing game specs just to take advantage of the next craze in 3D cards, etc. SB2 has very reasonable specs, but yes, a lot of us players with 3+ year old PCs are going to have to upgrade to play a game that comes out next year. I too disagree with the "bleeding edge" school of thought, but going from SB to SB2 is hardly "keeping up with the Joneses." I am no eye-candy junkie, but I'd like a game that has some semblance of realism, ease of use and that is feature rich. (Hence the T-72/ Balkan-something-or-other game everyone seems to be hyped about seems like some silly arcade game to me)

Besides, the choice to upgrade 6 PCs at a time is a FAR cry from what most of us poor 1 PC owners have to deal with. Yes, the near-instant obsolescence of the PC world sucks, but nobody said this was a cheap hobby.
