What are the white heat and black heat settings for? How would it be helpful to change the setting? :?

the settings are for white heat or black heat, duhhhh!!!!!!!!!
Seriously tho, when set to white heat, anything that gives off heat shows up as white, where as when set on black, anything that gives off heat will show up in black. I prefer white heat myself as it easier to see than black heat. Its just a matter of preference altho to my knowledge most gunners use white heat as in my opinion it is more clearer

So it isn’t used for anything specific?

In game, Black-hot TIS sometimes helps me pick out terrain features better than White-hot. On mostly-dirt or sand maps, it makes it easer to see the contours. I think this is a function of my monitor though, rather than a systemic thing.

DrDevice found the one application where it is useful.
You need not tweak the Gamma settings and brightness controls of your monitor and graphics card driver - you just invert the thermal image and happy faces everywhere. ;)

If you're an old-school programmer, you might have heard of "troglodyte mode".
On the old monochrome monitors (white, green or amber) there was usually a way to invert the display so the whole screen lit up and the text was black...hardcore geeks would switch to troglodyte mode when they had been working way too long and their eyes were going buggy reading the light-on-dark display.
Exhausted gunners might do the same thing, just for a change of scenery to keep themselves awake and alert.
