I think some of you may choose a 17” LCD when upgrade our PC, however the native resolution of the 17” LCD should be 1280x1024, that means 5:4, while the native resolution of the CRT monitor should be 4:3, e.g. 800x600, 1024x768 or even 1600x1200.
So I would concern about that does the SB2 has a feature to optimize the performance for the 5:4 ratio LCD monitor. It is because if we apply a 4:3 screen to a native 5:4 LCD monitor, the quality will be very bad!

not that bad on my 17" LCD.

SB2 won't have inherent restrictions of the screen resolutions (must be at least 800x600 though). You can pick any screen resolution that the driver of your graphics card provides.
Of course, screen resolution is just one factor of the formula - frame rates certainly are another, so if you want to use the native resolution of an LC display you need a graphics card that is powerful enough to run SB2 at 1280x1024 as well.

I'm running 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT.

With SB2? :P
On my laptop, which has an older video card, I can't play MS Flight Simulator 2004 at the LCD screen's native 1400x1050. I have to play at 800x600 if I want decent frame rates. Therefore, the picture is blurred somewhat. FS 2004 supports a 1400x1050 resolution, which would be razor-sharp on the LCD, but then my frame rates would be so low that I couldn't fly the plane.
This issue does not apply to CRT monitors at all.
