When I burn out the LRF on an M1, the daysight reticle disappears.
Does this really happen? If so, why?

i wondered about this too, so i dont burn the LRF in the game :D
seriously, i dont see any reason why it should happen in real life. there is no logic to it. i think its an SB glitch and nothing more.

The other M1 tankers out there can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the loss of the reticle on the M1 daylight sight indicates that there is a problem with your LRF (it's broken!). The daylight sight on the M1 is generated through the LRF and projected in the GPS. Having said that, its also possible and more common for your LRF to fail and for you to still have your daylight reticle. In this case, the dreaded "F" symbol (for fault) is displayed in the same location as your range, so a range display such as 1230F indicates that your LRF is not functioning properly and needs replaced. More often than not, this is caused by excessive lasing within a short period of time (laser can't cool down because its in use too quickly and too frequently. Personally, I never experienced a complete reticle loss while I was a tank gunner (1989-1992) on the M1-IP.
Again, if I am way off the mark, I apologize and blame it on the years away from the gunner's seat.

It was a deliberate design decision after conferencing with M1 gunners and master gunners. The reticle is being projected by a laser which uses the same optics to generate the LRF pulse, so if the powerful range finder laser fails, the reticule is supposed to go as well.
The "F" mark in the sight indicates other failures of the fire control system, e.g. a faulty fire control computer.
All the above represents eSim's knowledge about how the M1's FCS works. Maybe we did misunderstand our consultants. If there are people in the know here who really, absolutely, positively know that the way we implemented it is wrong in the M1, please speak up and help us improve our model.

Who would want to admit that they burned out a LRF?

We obviously have to track down some armored gun plumbers and get to the bottom of this. :)
Could any of you RL M1 crewmen talk to a large-caliber weapon tech?

Maybe he is like Pete from Earthworm Jim.
For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, he was this cute little dog that goes skipping along, but when he gets hurt, he turns into this giant ferocious monster rapid dog. (Think like the incredible hulk, only a dog.)

OK, here is how I understand it. (By the way, I am just back from 18 days out in the field with my tank. Annual Training was fun. Watch the gallery soon for my pics...)
I talked with our troop master gunner. He said that for the reticle to totally go away, one of 2 thigns need to happen. COMPLETE power loss to he LRF, or totally frying the TNB. I personally have never seen either. I have lased 7 times in 45 seconds and the LRF worked just ducky. (The new B3s engagement.... had trouble with the troops.) Even when most other things in the tank are f---ed up, you still usually see a reticle in the day sight.
Now, I have another question that is realted to this... All symbols, either in TIS or DAY are generated by the TIS. When the TIS goes out, can we still see the range and other such things? If we do, we should not. I cannot remember if SB does that or not. I remembered this the hard way at AT. We hooked up TWGSS to the tank and it broke. When it broke, it messed up the TIS and I instantly lost all my symbols. That was the only time we "died" at AT. Bummer Dude.

You can enter range manually, and IIRC the last range the LRF gave to the BC will persist until the range is entered manually, or the BC goes south for the winter.

OK, we'll keep it in mind.

I got a question for other M1 tankers out there....
If the TIS goes out and you lose your symbols... Will the computer still take a manual range entry through the CCP or the Battlesight Button? (By the way, I think SB2 shuld replicate with one keystroke a user definable "battlesight range".)

yes it will still take the entry, but the only indication will be the gun jumping to elevation if you have no symboligy in the sight, better off useing the GAS
