View Full Version : Newcomer in New Zealand
Hi All,
I am a newcomer to SB in New Zealand. Glad I found your excellent site, as the second hand copy of SB I brought over the net had no manual!
Are there any other known SB'ers in New Zealand? I am a long way off multiplay at this point (still learning the sim), but I am aware from playing other online games like Everquest that the lag from New Zealand to USA is likely to be a killer (literally!).
I guess my chances are not good, only 4 million people in the country and the only armour we had in the army were some old Scorpions that got sold off years ago
Still, looks like a nice community here even if I have to stick to single play.

Welcome to the community! :)
You're not too bad off, your Leopard 1s might be the best 40-year-old combat vehicle in the world...and there's talk of M1s headed your way.
I remember there's a guy named Flash-Kiwi who used to hang out here, not sure if he still plays. If your connection to Australia is respectable, there are a few more players on the east coast. I'll see if I can locate some names.

Yes, Welcome aboard..
There are around 4-6 from your area IIRC.. Floydi is one, but chk the map option, opening page, right column, of Forum. I think, and you'll see around 4-6 flags with names.. then you can maybe post and register in Multiplayer forum..
Best of Luck..

If you scroll to the top of this page, you can either use Member List to locate these guys or use the Search function to find their posts and get some e-mail addresses that way.
You could also try co-op games with guys on the american west coast; playing against the AI the lag effect won't hurt you so much. Mogwa plays from Hawaii and does fine, although he's noticeably more prone to connection drops than players in Canada or the 48 states.

also i wouldnt avoid Playing MP, as once you learn, you have to relearn to play MP anyway, is a different style. I had the game 3 days and went MP, and thats how i play 95% of my games, always have. play MP, find the baddest guy out their and go right at him till you learn how to survive( anyway thats what i did.)took 2 weeks before i figured out where i was getting killed from, and another 2 weeks before i managed to fire back before i died.come online 10 PM EST(new york time) on friday night and play in TGIF games, lots of new guys play there.once you can shoot, drive, and set way points and know how to split your tanks, I'm sure we would all love to meet you in MP play.

Welcome Mars ! :D
Indeed we are a very nice community !
It is a good idea to train in SP before to switch to MP , just to give you a chance to learn "gently" how to gun well and to orientate yourself on unknow maps .
anyway , see you soon online I hope .
Cheers . :3starSK:

Yes, I have to agree totally here with BW, and not the SW way.. as I too, played SP for 1 yr before venturing to online MP.. (maybe to long) but, as SW said correctly, even with that experience in hand, you're gonna die ALOT for the first couple of weeks..
But, there are exceptions to every rule, and I have had the pleasure of training up some, in the past, along with recently, that have become "most dangerous" in less than one month training..
Leave ya with one last thought.. as with every rule, there are exceptions..
One never knows, unless one tries..

Mars, I played SP for many months before I tried MP. So Sherm's statement isn’t a rule that all go by. Also it took me about a month to become effective in MP. That may or may not be the case with you there Mars.
Also I didnt have a manual too.
Thanks heaps for all the encouragement and information :)
I think I will stay on SP for a while untill I feel I have the basics. Some of the discussion in the Anti-Frustration kit seems to point the way on what SB missions to undertake.
BTW, it is Australia that has Leopard 1's, not New Zealand. It is a little bit like confusing USA and Canada I think  (jk). I think if New Zealand tried hard, we might be able to kit out a couple of bulldozers with corrugated tin roofing iron and some deer hunting rifles

Oh try out the tutorials. That is where I get all my gunnery practice from. Oh I have a quite interesting story about a T-72 and about 30 Sabot rounds from a Leo. For some reason the only thing that killed it was a HEAT round.
