Greetings all,
Yes the new Leo 2 pics are very nice and I especially like the first interior images of this ride. Now just how many of these switchs and controls are going to be selectable? And thru the keyboard still, or mouse clickable? Really doesn't matter it's still all good.
Great going e-Sim, hope to see more soon.
Later ..... 9erRed

Ssnake: Creating the interior of tanks is an extremely demanding job since there are no usable technical drawings available. One would have to climb into each tank model, take photos and all kinds of relative measures (you can't set up a coordinate system, instead one must rely on chain dimensioning - in designers' terminology that's just another word for asking for trouble. Since the measures must be taken from the assembled tank, measure tape is the only instrument that is practical in the cramped environment (and any tank is cramped once that you don't use it the way it was intended to be used). Since it's difficult to even get exact measures, one can hope for quarter-inch accuracy. Unfortunately that results in an insane amount of model iterations where you create a basis shape first, find out that something doesn't fit, and once that you adapt what doesn't fit you'd have to deal with a cascade of changes so in the end it doesn't fit somewhere else, or contradicts the measures taken.
Nobody with a sane mind would attempt to do that - at least not if you try to create a model that is visually up to today's graphical standards. I have seen it in some WW2 tank simulations, but I never found these models visually attractive. Besides, they rarely add to the actual functionality. That may be different in a jet cockpit with a gazillion of instruments, but for tanks...?

it's a danish leopard 2a5, a special edition leopard, with a chassis similar to the strv 122, but the turret doesn't have the extra thick roof armour.
oh yeah, and lots of thanks to Nils for flying around the world with measure tape and a camera :)
he took 4 trips to denmark only to get all the pictures and measures needed for the leopard 2a5DK!

Leo 2A5!! M1 tankers watch out

Actually I think the M1 section will lose more shifting to Leo, as it happens today ;)

First of all, thanks for the pics, I never imagined it woud be this good. Deja, i cant wait to see what u did for the exteriors of the normal 2A4, being myself embarrasingly partof the ones who whined about price, each time i see more i realize how wrong i was.
Sorry for the naive question, how much will the armour upgrade will help the Leopards?? is this Swede armour package in the front hull enough to avoid loosing ones turret, at least against the older sabots? how much will the overall upgrade (turret and hull) improve against top line US ammo? say A2. I know this matter of loosing a turret is not really important in overall results, a dead tank is a dead tank and it has to do more with ones poor skills than with the tank itself...bBut is very distracting to see that one of my tanks or my personal tank itself looses it, after so much time playing sb, it still annoys me wether on sp or in mp games.
on another matter, which ifv/apc do the Danes use? did they ask esim to model it as well?

Here is how I think things will work in regards to the M1A2. If eSim can get a contract with the U.S. Army for SB Pro, like they did with SB, we will definitely have an M1A2, if they can't, then it is very iffy.
So just keep your eyes peeled on the news at the front page of the eSimgames.com, and hope it looks like this some day:
Date near now, 2004:
eSim Games and the U.S. Army, sign a contract follow-on development and customization of Steel Beasts Professional, U.S. Army, butt kicking version. Development includes a playable M1A2
Jan 5, 2003:
eSim Games and the Danish Army Materiel Command sign a contract for follow-on development and customization of Steel Beasts Professional, Danish Army Version. Development includes a playable Leopard 2A5(DK).

the armour upgrade will help the leopard 2 significantly. i can say that you have to be much closer. with the new armour, the length of the leo2 hull is increased with 240mm, and the general thickness of the top of the front hull is increased as well.
additionaly, the leopard 2A4 was a bit easy on the turret throwing. a bit further study has shown that the likelihood of the hull ammo storage cooking off is not as high as previously thought.

has the Leo2A5DK a tis in his peri?
Yes, of course. All 2A5 and later versions have it. Why they didn't spend the money for a second laser range finder remains a mystery to me, but I guess that the TC's TIS (called "TIM" here) is intended to be primarily used as a surveillance monitor and target ID device (with its optional 24x mag).

Still no pink nipples.
Besides, "50x" is just doubling the pixels, not a real magnification. Even in the M1A2 the physical resolution ends with 25x.

I don't want to nit pick but a question.......
Why is the MRS on the Leo 2 on the wrong side. It looks like its at the 3 o'clock position? Should be at the 12 if I know my 120mm's, or is it just the US 120 at the top position, guess it does not matter...
Could it be that the tube is not screwed in all the way by some maintance weenie?
As I look at my real pics I see it there also, why the move from 12 to 3 o'clock?
Or is it just a Danish,German thing? heheheh JK
dejawolf
06-07-2004, 04:57 PM
well, according to my 50 or so reference pics that Nils sent me, the MRS is on the 3 o'clock.
why?, have no idea, but it does looks quite nifty..

06-07-2004, 05:13 PM
Yes all my pics have it there as well, seems strange though that the US, and the Challenger have them on top of the tube. Our own LeoC2 has it on the top as well.If the bore sighting is done using the MRS , it would make it easer to have it on the side rather up top.

As long as it works, I don't care for the exact location of the muzzle reference sensor. But it has always been on the right side of the muzzle, even the early version on the Leopard 2A4 before it got removed for a couple years for its mount re-development.

Thanks for the new desktop, Deja, looks like a photo: http://www.steelbeasts.com/albums/Leopard_2/2A5DK_right_zoom.sized.jpg
Though the database will be tweaked for SB2, it gives a rough comparison of the armor values:
M1A1HA
Turret front=660
Hull front glacis=560
Leo 2A5
TF=870
HFG=620
The turret difference is great, the hull difference is small. If American and Mexican tankers aim low, they should do OK.
I'm glad the kitty is getting an armor upgrade. But no more stealing our DU! Back to the DM53 spitball, that seems fair.
dejawolf
06-12-2004, 04:36 PM
btw. those figures are for the german leopard.
the danish leopard 2a5 has much thicker hull armour.
