USAREUR soldiers take on tank simulator at AUSA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Typically he’d be riding in a tank at Hohenfels, Germany. Today Spc. Bruce Brade (right), of 1-4 Infantry Regiment, Combat Maneuver Training Center, Hohenfels, is firing a tank simulator indoors at the Association of the United States Army 2002 Annual Meeting. Brade, with the direction of Staff Sgt. Warren Desira of the 7th Army Noncommissioned Officer Academy, Grafenwoehr, is moving an M60A1 tank over a computerized battlefield and testing a “Fire Control Stabilization Upgrade Kit built by Cadillac Gage. Brade and Desira are among the more than 20 soldiers who are here representing USAREUR and learning about the Army’s newest trends and technology. The AUSA annual meeting is the largest gathering of U.S. Army affiliated professionals worldwide, and runs for three days, Oct. 21-23, in the nation’s capital.

No, it's not SB. SB Pro will use the same engine as SB2, and it's not too surprising that a tabletop trainer for a tank like the M60 will look similar to what SB looks like. Same subject, similar technology - similar results (but probably dramatically different pricing :D)

I never liked posing for publicity shots like that. I can only take so much of the working PR psychology that requires a guy to stick his index finger in something (sometimes it's a 12 V, 10 A power supply :o ) while another guy watches what he's pointing at. Eech.

Actually I have to correct myself - this IS a customized version of Steel Beasts, intended for some trade shows of one of the contributing defense companies to the M1; they make the fire control computer, and we adapted SB in a way that SB and the ballistic computer exchange data so that SB provides the environmental data and the display of the firing solution while the original ballistic computer ... uh ... computes the ballistic solution. Yea. Great wording. Eloquent as ever... :casstet:

we have a trainer in israel that is mounted inside the tank itself and controlled from a computer outside of it, so all the calcs are made by the original tank equipment, the gunner seats in his natural env. with original equipment and feel, but what he sees is computer generated, it is amazing!!! liked it a lot, me and the operator had some fun trying several scenarios like firing in urban areas (and they do look like authentic palestinian village!) and firing to extremly long ranges, or extremly close infantry raid.. great stuff.
now that i'm injured i get my kicks by playing SB and enjoying every moment, every BP i clim on!!
