Hey ppl,

I am a sports shooter since a couple of years, mostly with pistols yet.
A couple of days I finally got my rifle fitted with scope, and now I ask myself if there is any better stuff to fill ordinary sandbag with some other material than sand, as the fine grains will lay down on the weapon in my experience. Didnt think this would ever happen, but I have seen it, clean sandbags, no sign of sand on it, but still you find grains of it on the weapon.
I dont want it to screw up my barrel, so, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yep!!!
Try Sawdust, not the fine powdery stuff, but a thick grain type that won't seep out of the hessian sack, plus its lighter if you need to lug it about with you.

Any decent Timber yard or Sawmill will have tons of the stuff and will probably give it away if you ask nicely... ;)

Silica pellets are best for the sand bag's ... as they don't stay wet or damp, and are easier to mold into shape. (sawdust or sawchips will stay wet)[u can buy the pellets in bulk, used as moisture eliminator in packing materials] Also have the "bags" made from dupont waterproof material.[400dernier should be tough enough]
Ref. the cleaning - after a good day's shooting 150-200rds
I'll start with some accuBore on a 2x4 cloth and run it thru the barrel. Let it do it's work while u clean the mag's or trigger mech. Follow the accuBore with dry 2x4's till it's removed then apply med. oiled 2x4's and follow with the brass brush a couple of times. Don't get the brass brush near the accuBore as it will desolve the brush. follow the brush with a med. oiled 2x4 and then lightly oiled 2x4's till barrel shows clean 2x4's. The last pullthru should be with a well oiled 2x4 to set overnight. The next day apply another med. oiled 2x4 to barrel as it will have absorbed and sweated off the first oiling. For 7.62mm barrels use 2x4's and for 5.56mm split the 2x4's. The brass brush should be used with a cleaning rod not a pullthru.(U can get fiberglass of nylon coated steel) And only pull the brush and 2x4's thru the barrel in same direction - Breach to Muzzel. I used to take the handle off the rod and just drop it thru from the breach, assuming the wpn will "brake" or open to allow this. roger so far.... 9erRed

I thought there might be some kind of standard kit - fit to the calibre...

My SIG accepts a steel brush with just some fat - some old cloth to get the dirt off - some fat on top, that's it.
