I have a CH Combat Stick 568 now, and the darn thing isn't recognized by SB. I don't use the profiler - don't know how to set it up. And I can't find my trusty old Wingman stick - so, I'm kinda screwed right now. Does anyone else use this or know of a map for it, some form of cure?

Have you checked their website for updated configuration software?
You may also want to go into your control panel, click on gaming options and click Add.
My Win 98se has 3 or 4 CH joysticks listed there.
Hope this helps.
PS - are you set up on Team Speak yet?

The joystick shows up under my game controllers and tests out fine. I didn't see an update on the CH website... I guess I'm screwed for a minute. Thanks for your help though Mapman...
and and
p.s. my mic is goofed up and doesn't work, but i can listen :) hehe.

...Many people find the mouse quite accurate for gunning....especially if you go into the mouse controls and slow down the response time first.

i never could gun with the mouse... anyway, problem solved. I bought a new logitech joystick and it works just fine... so look out! BTW: where the heck is the chat room now?

It has fallen into disuse. Almost everyone uses TeamSpeak now. :x (TeamSpeak is great for communication in a game, but some of us just don't find it conducive to conversation.)

Hack - open up your volume controls and double check your mic is not muted.
Also, in the TS screen , click on settings and options, and check whether you have wave set or not - mine won't work worth a damn w/ direct sound set.

Hack, go to:
http://www.mirc.com/
I use this to get into SB Chat.
I'll be around tomorrow starting around 1420 PDST, or close to. If you download mIRC and want to get into SB Chat, I'll talk you through the steps.

We can rule out the "controller ID" issue, can we?

Not sure Ssnake. I just bought a new one - a Wingman from logitch. I know that works... I want to say that the CH combatstick worked with SB 1 at one point. And I can't operate the profiler, just can't quite figure it out, so without an interface from within the game to assign buttons that controller really doesn't work for me. So, I guess my problem is not solved, but it is remedied. Thanks guys.
Oh and Magnet, I have mirc. I must have just messed up trying to connect last night. I found a link to the chat room in my favorites and used that last night. Seems most everyone was on TS. Now, I just need to get this new mic working... lol.

What's the issue with the profiler?
You can download the profile for Steel Beasts from www.wingmanteam.com . Create a new profile, and select to load/import the downloaded file, then locate ..\release\tankSim.exe
You can then reassign all kinds of commands to the buttons at will.

Hey guys. Just to warn you, I'm a COMPLETE newbie to SB, just got it a few weeks ago and have been TRYING to learn the game on single player.
I have a Microsoft Sidewinder joystick, and it will NOT work. I do okay with the mouse, but I'd like to be able to have the option of using either or both in conjunction. Any advice?

Welcome aboard S8..
Well, my guess is that your stick, which is no longer"supported by Microsoft" may not work with your current version of DX 9 or whatever you have..
Kinda thinking in the "drivers" area..
If ya can, get a new stick.. anywhere around 29 to 39 dollars.. and your problem will be solved.
But, wait, as I'm sure more will respond today, and may, may have a better solution for your problem..
Good luck

IIRC, you can go into XP and define any joystick as a generic 2 or 4 button joystick, and that should get the stick part/fire button working - so far as any other functions .. you may be out of luck.

It's not a drivers issue. My stick works great with everything else. Only other problem is the throttle refuses to work with Panzer Elite, but I don't play enough of that game to really worry about it. I actually think it's that my stick is too new... It uses a USB port rather than a standard stick port. Does SB not support USB sticks???
On another note, I remember seeing a tanker's helmet/personal radio set at a surplus place. Anyone think I should make an investment and get one of these and go to Radio Shack to get some converters for the mic/earphone jacks???

Sbrocker8, my recommendation for your joystick problems would be to uninstall your software from your joystick in your control panel under device manager reboot your machine and let your operating system find your joystick. Sometimes that helps. Otherwise you should have no problems using a joystick that uses a USB port, mine uses one also and I have no problem. As for the CVC helmet, if your some type of electical engineer who knows alot about software, go for it. Otherwise I think that will be a bigger problem to get up and running than your joystick.
Oh! Welcome to the club.

For the helmet, the hookups look pretty basic. Looks like the same hookups used in aircraft, guitars, mics, amps, ETC. Pretty simple stuff, Radio Shack has jack adapters for all that crap. No software involved as far as hooking it up to your PC goes, at least for the output into your ears. For the mic, I guess it depends on the PC. I know my old PC from the mid 90's never needed any software for a mic. The PC I'm on now might though, does the Windows XP OS require software for mics???
Now for my stick, I'm pretty sure I let it do that the first time...

I stand corrected. After having looked at some detailed pics of CVC's, I was wrong about the jacks. I'd be willing to bet though that there exists an adapter somewhere to get it to plug into regular headphone and mic jacks!!!

BOOYAH!!! Adapters for CVC helmets, among others!!! I can't really make sense of most of the page, but I know that's what it is! I guess I'd have to talk w/ someone in their sales department to get what I'd need, but how cool would it be to play SB in a real CVC???

The only reason I can think of that a person might need a CVC helment to play SB is when your Spouse breaks into your computer room armed with a ball bat and says, "Get the hell off of that computer right now and come to bed. And take off that stupid helment, you're freaking out the dog!"

But it'd be COOL!!! The COOLNESS factor would go WAY the hell up!
