Don't think ya half to worry about whose tank is better here KT, cause, for whatever the "right" reason, I see Homer's depiction, just like I do Frankenstien, and the Leo has the head-look, like him. All that is missing in this picture are the 2 electrodes sticking out each side of the turret..

Happy Halloween all.. lol

There is no need to start a debate, we all know that no tank can match an M1A1 MBT on the field of battle.

(Line modified from a very old tank-net original).

Actually the M1A1 is getting pretty antiquated as of late. Have you guys heard wbout the cool stuff the Chinese are getting on their Type 98's? Those things, as well as the newer Russian tanks, will be able to detect when they're lased and also know where it's coming from. Talk about an ambush spoiler...

well, for the M1A1 blessed, when you get your dirty mitts on pro PE you'll truly start to hate the danish leopard 2a5..

DrDevice
10-27-2004, 02:21 PM
That's becasue the M1A1 is several years older...

If we could get the US Army to fork over for Pro, we could se an M1A2, then you can bring your 2A5...

Someday...

New?
Shtora is from ~88 i think, Drozd even older (~1980), VVR-2 on the USMC LAV's has been in service since 1995-1996 .. The evaluation from the russians is that it's nice to have a laser warning device, but what are you gonna do with that information? It's just a deathwarning system, what you need is a laserwarning device along with some active protection system..

The germans and the french are currently leading the evolution in hardkill APS. And they got some nice system on the way...

LWR gets you to turn the turret in the direction of the incoming round. very nifty.

Might be if you'r facing AT-8 without capability to penetrate the front of your tank (and pray to God it's not topattacking), but then again whats the awerage range on the LWR? You would atleast need a warning about 5-10sec before the impact to react.. Even if the turret turns, it will point at a general direction, you will have to search for the missile launcher, then you would have to lase and fire and get you'r tank out of the way. It takes time. Launching smoke? the same problem here, you must have time to move your tank out of the space where they saw you.

But intergrate it in your C3 device, then your fellow tank will know where the threat are.

Could just be rumor, but a friend of mine spoke to an officer in the Indian Army. They supposedly had a demo of the LWR from the Russians. Hit it with two lasers, and the system locked the turret up. Talk about a bad day!

I think that these laser warning systems are primarily designed to help against laser designators for beam riding and homing missiles, not so much against LRFs. And even then: Lase an area near the target, and shift your aim. Or have the turret of the target alternate between two directions, could be fun to watch.

well, and there's the SHTORA jammer, for LOS missiles.

Homer

The russian systems tend focus against the munition itself. They either try to seduce or hide from the guidance system or go for the hard kill with some kind of explosives. The chinese system goes directly after the shooter, it uses a high powered laser to either disable the weapon systems guidance optics or damage the eyesight of the gunner. The laser looks like it's independent of the turret, in both azimuth and elevation.

The next generation of wep systems seems to be moving away from a dependence on lasers and towards millimeter radar, thermal or GPS guidance.

Even the elderly Cougar has a laser filter for the gunner's sight - I assume that most AFVs have it as well. Hence that anti-eyeball laser would probably only be a worry for infantry with ATGMs.

It destroys the sight on your weapon. I'w seen pictures on the work and it dots the screen full of shining dots. You simply can't aim with it..

I can't seem to find any pictures.. But the device is called JD-3 "Dazzler", and is mounted on the Type 98 tank..

Also remember seing something similair on a Bradley during GW1, a huge dazzler..

and russia has ARENA. prolly the most effective anti-HEAT system there is to date. but well, it's going to be outdated when electric armour arrives on the scene.

Talk about an ambush spoiler...

These fancy things wouldn't do anything against those nice old fashioned and very effective ambushes the US is experiencing in Iraq. A road buried IED doesn't need a laser, neither do RPGs.

Arena and Drozd are the only operationally deployed APS. And non of them are anywhere near reliable.

One big problem with such systems will obviouse be the over-confident in the system, making the crew relay more on the APS then in tactics and hard protection. (that's my thought)..

Another problem is the range requirement for an APS to be effective. With engagement ranges in urban terrain being what they are, this poses a challenge to the developer to decrease the standoff range and response time to the minimum. An additional problem is the threat that certain APS types pose to the inevitable friendly dismounts in an urban environment. The system might disable the incoming threat, but it can also injure or kill those around you as it does so.
