View Full Version : Returning to SB + a problem

Hello.
Been away for a couple of years, but wanted to knock the cobwebs off for the pending release of SB2 (or Pro, or whatever's next) ... so pulled the box off the shelf, dusted it off and re-installed it and patched it up to v1.226.
Everything seems to work as I remember, save one thing: In external view I can't get the camera to traverse with the joystick. I can raise and lower the view, but cannot move it side-to-side. The view kind of 'vibrates' when I attempt to move left and right, like it's locked up or something. Hope I'm explaining that clearly.
Am I remembering wrong? Can't you look around using the joystick in external and TC views? (Mouse look works in TC position, but not external).
Traverse with the joystick works fine in the gunner's position, btw.
Anyway, I'm guessing that I'm missing something simple. It's not a dodgy install, as I re-installed twice to the same end result.
I installed from the original retail out-of-the-box version and added the two upgrades on the e-sims site: 1195 and 1-226. Did I miss something?
System specs if needed:
P4 2.80
1022 MB RAM
DirectX 9.0c
Windows XP SP2 (running SB as compatible with Windows98/ME)
CH 568 Combatstick (+CH Pro Throttle for additional buttons) programed through CH Control Manager v3.0

That, or try hitting alt -tab keys at same time, out, then back in, or when in game, hit the shift key and J key at the same time, this can sync your joystick to the game..
Good luck..

I find nothing in the FAQ about XP and this particular problem.
Besides, I'm running it in Windows 98/Me compatibility mode.
Shift-J doesn't fix it.
Alt/Tabbing doesn't fix it.
The problem seems to be confined to external view. As TC I can mouse-look around but can't pan my view with the joystick.
And it kind of trashes the ability to play from the vantage point of, say, the Brad or the Soviet tanks.
-------
Speaking of views ... is SB2 going to be TrackIR compatible? I can't live without it in flightsims .. and I'll bet it would be kikazz from the TC's perspective.

 what kind of joystick do you have? IF you're trying to use a Mircrosoft Sidewinder, chances are, being that MS doesn't support their sticks anymore, possibly, your DX 9 and it, don't get along.. and time for a new stick..

See my original post.
Stick and throttle are USB, set up to be seen as one controller through CH manager software in my sb profile.
There is no problem with DX9 and the stick. It works fine in all games; and fine in this one with the exeption of this one function.
btw, for clarification, the external view is locked facing the direction of the gun tube.
I know there's probably something simple at the heart of this. Thought maybe someone had encountered the same thing along the line.
I'll investigate further when the opportunity arises.
Thanks, anyway, fellows.

Greetings Splash,
Using a Ms Joystick and XP should not be a problem, there is a difficulty in using the key or macro mapping software with XP. But having the joystick functions working correctly during sim's or games should still work.
Confirm that you have installed the correct xp drivers to enable XP to identify your current joystick, then go to the button "Start" select "Settings" / "Control Panel" / "Game Controllers"
From there you should see a box displaying your current joystick and showing it's "Status" (should say OK). Select the "Advanced" button and confirm that you have the joystick set to allow older programs to use it. (under preferred device)
Go back to the original game controllers box and highlight the joystick and select the "Properties" button, you'll see 2 tab pages now - one will be the "Settings" other is the "Test" tab. Under Settings you can Calibrate the joystick enabling XP to "See" the funtions when their selected or moved. Selecting the calibrate option will detect and set the "Throttle" and "Rudder" functions (rudder is what your looking for). After completing the cal. setup select save and it will be coded to that joystick. You can then test the components and buttons from the test tab.
Also note here: if you have a "Profile" assigned to the joystick it must be disabled before enabling the SB game, otherwise some keys or functions will not work correctly. But since XP doesn't recognise the mapping software (old 95 software) that shouldn't be a problem, for other brands of sticks this would be important.
OK all for now.. Hope that helps.. Later ..... 9erRed
PS: I run a Ms Sidewinder Force Feedback Pro and the selected controller box displays that name, any other joystick name and there may be a problem. XP must see your correct controller not a sudo name for it.

Thanks, 9erRed.
Since my stick is not MS, but CH, as my original post notes, I'm not sure whether the bulk of your tutorial is relevant, but I'll look into it.
The following might be, however:
Also note here: if you have a "Profile" assigned to the joystick it must be disabled before enabling the SB game, otherwise some keys or functions will not work correctly. But since XP doesn't recognise the mapping software (old 95 software) that shouldn't be a problem, for other brands of sticks this would be important.
I assume you're talking about MS Sidwinder software here, but as I noted, I do use CH Manager profiling software to allow the game to see two controllers (joystick and throttle) as one. This allows me to put a lot of keyboard commands on the throttle; things like indexing rounds, switching to map view, switching sights, etc, etc, so I don't have to reach for the keyboard in the heat of an engagement.
It could be that the game just won't let me do that. I'll look further into it, but I'm not sure why all functions would work fine except panning the external view.
It's a puzzlement.
I have a CH fightersick usb and throttle usb and dont have a problem. Make sure you load the profile BEFORE you start sb, I do have a problem if I try to do that.

Found my problem. Sort of.
On a whim I just deleted my sb stick profile and started from scratch. Now all works fine. I moved a few of the commands around; apparently something was conflicting with something else, causing the external and TC views to always be locked to the "face gun" position.
Anyway, whatever the conflict was has been resolved with the new, improved stick map.
Later, gentlemen. I must go about knocking the rust off.

Splash,
can you please contact me about this issue, and provide as many details about the whole issue as possible?
We have experienced this problem, but could never reliably reproduce it. We need more data to find out what the reason for this behavior is. It shouldn't happen.

I have the same problem that Splash has, IE. when ever i go to the out side views ( F8 ) my joystick ( Wingman Attack 2 )refuses to pan from side to side but will move up-down. In CC view ( F7 )the same thing happens, however the mouse will let me move side to side. Gunner's controls ( F6 )are not effected at all. The other controls F4,3,2,1 do not show any problems. Also while in the CC view you can not switch to the bino's unless you are useing the mouse plus if you go to F2 or3 while in the CC position the override comes on and can't be shut off.
All this happened after i upgraded my system from Win98 SE, to WinXP.
Reinstalling SB did not help, and Logitech the makers of Wingman joysticks has a set of drivers, which i D/L ,but still the problem persists.
not sure what to do. ANY SUGGESTIONS GUYS!!!

I don't have a solution, but we need to analyze your situation so we can develop one.

Will do. e-mail on the way shortly.
hussar, my problem was fixed completely by re-doing my stick profile. I'm not positive which change made the difference, but I suspect it was the main POV hat. (I didn't see a need for a POV when the joystick and the mouse served as view devises, so I had re-assigned it to handle other key commands).
Anyway, my new map leaves the stick's hat as a POV, and now I can pan with the joystick.
Ssnake, my email will include the old and new stickmap files, if you have access to CH Control Manager v3.0 so you can compare.
----hmmmm. I would send you an e-mail, but I am apparently overlooking your e-mail address. Could you point me to it?

A possible source: the field names in my account info added my "occupation" tag to the "MSN" field. It's possible that the filed names and such changed in the upgrade.

The problem some of you are having is because of the theme you are using. I use "PNTheme" and "PostNuke," and I see the Email button under Ssnake's posts in IE 6, Netscape 7.2 and Firefox 1.0.
However, if I log out, and therefore use the default "CamoGreen" theme, I cannot see the Email button under Ssnake's post.
Therefore, the trouble is not with the browsers, but with certain PostNuke themes.
