Thank you all for a wonderful game this past weekend. And thanks especially to you, Sean for showing me how to get in and work my way around. As a newbie, I didn't know quite what to expect when I jumped in with both feet (tracks? - :P ) and played my first on-line game. It was a BLAST! I'm taking all the great advice you all provided and am upping my skillset in Single Player mode. You can bet that I'll be back for more!
Angel
Great! Hope to see you around soon.

Wahrburg -- :D back!
Mapman -- sure am :) (at least in a virtual tank, anyway). I spent 20 years in the Air Force as a Ground Communications Techie (should have been on base more but it seems I always got put into Ground Combat related jobs). I fell in love with tanks when I was stationed in Korea (late 1980's) and became fascinated with cyber-tanks soon after.
PaleRider - me too! Best to be ready in case them "Oklahomites" come racing across the border (lol)

Angel...welcome!
It is always good to have one of the fairer sex kicking our butts here. Tends to keep us humble.

I was about to put up a post reminding people that Angel is a guy's name in Latin America, then noticed that Angel had confirmed her girlhood just before hitting Submit.
Welcome - glad to have you.

Best be careful Bluewings -- this Texas Rose has thorns
Thanks, Mapman -- it might take me a bit, but until then I figure "if I can't humble ya'll with firepower, I'll humble you with a wiley target" - and make you use up all your rounds (lol)
Hector - TankHunter- Thanks! I missed the comraderie from being active duty. Its great to be with good people again.
Hell Hound - you're right - Angel is a guy's name in the Hispanic culture. However, my real name is Mary. I chose "Angel" because it is sweet for when I am feeling sweet :D -- and I'll use "Fallen Angel" when I'm not  (lol) If I can get a few more women to join we might even get our own virtual unit going (the "Valkyries", or something akin to that).

And your theme song will be "Ride of the Valkyries"?
In The Halls of Valhalla I finally take my place
With my sword and my shield I enter Odin's realm
I'm an immortal spirit now with a heart made of steel
With the gods on high forever I will live and laugh at the
fears of man.

Geez, you guys are scaring me. I'm going to go get a couple of my guy-pals and watch Fried Green Tomatoes, followed by The English Patient. That's how real men meet their fears.

(ROFL) ShotMagnet - I kinda figured you would have preferred "Steel Magnolias" (lol)
TopKick - That's the idea, except there is a cool music track (Wagner meets Jimmi Hendricks kinda sound) named "Valkyrie" by a group called, "World Without End" (it can be downloaded for free at http://music.download.com/worldwithoutend/3600-8627_32-100078580.html?tag=listing#100614380 ). I replaced my splash and menu .wav files with it. It's a bit slow for the first 30 seconds or so, but picks up real quick after that.
Quick note - I'll be off line for 4 days (starting tomorrow morning). We're deploying our little group out with a few friends for four days camping in East Texas. We've got the wine, the guitar, the drum, and a nice campfire waiting for us. I'll keep my ears perked for the whine of turrets and the clatter of tracks (you should have figured by now I wouldn't go caming without a TOW or two with me - lol). :D

Let me take them off so  :P
By the way Angel Mary , try to get in touch with Snoopy (ICQ :213805357) , she is a "Tank-Babe" too , a charming Canadian girl , She would be an excellent recruit for the "Valkyries" . Snoopy likes Leos mind ...
Anyway , glad to have you onboard 8)

I will note in my logbook, your SA with most that I've read here about ya, and prepare myself for possible Sabots, with a kiss of death from the Angel, and in return, I shall load up my Sabots with both, a spanking, and some shaggin-power, in return.. hehehe

Don't you think this might be a better theme song? http://dw.com.com/redir?&destUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fmusic-files.download.com%2Fmp3%2F100294134%2F100326693%2 FWorld_Without_End-March_of_the_50_Foot_Women.mp3&edId=3&siteId=32&oId=3600-8627_32-100078580&ontId=8627&lop=link&tag=link<ype=dl_192k&astId=2&pid=100294134&mfgId=100078580&merId=100078580

I didn't. But then, I know she's married.
She's also the only person I know of in the community that's working on technologies to be put into Future AFVs( actual, not cyber).
I'm curious as to how your poject stacks up compared to the one being put out by Carnegie Mellon.I've been following that for a few years.
Kinda like the X-Prize of tanks.

Thanks again everyone, for the warm and friendly welcome :D
The camping trip was wonderful!!! The weather stayed sunny and my voice is raspy from all the laughter. It was a great break fo all of us (smiles).
ShermansWar -- The Carnegie Mellon guys are awesome! They call themselves the "Red Team" (if I remember correctly). They used an old Hummer to modify into their autonomous entry in the last DARPA Challenge. They have a second one on the ready line ("Highlander, or something akin). I tell you what -- if they don't win the prize this year, I'll be surprised -- (I'm expecting quite a number to actually finish the race this year (at least 3), but the question is "who will be first?").
Our project was named "Team Odyssey", the hardware was named, "Odysseus" and the software was named, "Athena" (the AI that runs the whole system). I took a different route from a lot of the rest (a personality trait - LOLOLOL) and decided to build a system that minimizes the modifications necessary to a "host" vehicle and concentrate on a much more flexible and easy-to-install-and-maintain system that could be adapted to the majority of existing inventory vehicles. It looks like a small refrigerator that sits in the driver's seat with connecting cables and hydraulics (for steering, braking, acceleration, etc...) coming out of it. My goal was to create a system that could be mass-produced inexpensively (since the true "power" lies in the software running it all), rugged, and dependable that could be installed by any trained Maintenance Yard weenie in a matter of a few hours or so. Initial tests proved a bunch of my theories correct and the partial prototype we put together (literally on my kitchen table - laughs) passed all of it's initial tests. The field tests of the guidance and control-electronics worked great! Unfortunately, we couldn't get anyone to sponsor our effort with the parts/money we needed and personal investment started to get more than we could handle. Consequently, active development came to a grinding halt last September. Now - while I've never been known to let red-flags stop me from doing anything I really wanted to do, I decided to put the brakes on the project until after the current Grand Challenge. I'll either enter the next Challenge, or give all my research (and developed subsystems) to DARPA itself (or another team).
You are right - I am married and my husband is a research scientist for fuels and lubricants at a major research facility. He's a wonderful man.
Good news - I spoke with two of my friends (both active duty) and they will probably join us here on Steel Beasts. Look's like the "Valkyries" might become a viable threat to you guys (smiles and laughs).

So long as he keeps his research up  -- I'm happy !!!
Don't worry about joking with me like that -- after 20 years in the military and two teenage sons, I can handle just about anything (smiles and laughs).
Elf - Thanks for the invitation to join the games. I missed the one this evening  and am headed out of town tomorrow ("on the road again..."). I will definitely make plans to join you this coming week.
Ssanake - and everyone else -- thanks for the warm and friendly welcome. I am getting soooo addicted to this program. I can't wait for SB pro PE.

Welcome Angel!!! This is just way too cool for me. It sounds like your husband is a VERY Lucky man. A great sense of humor AND a techy! I live on the East Coast and all the women I meet are Paris Hilton wannabes with the technical expertise of a three day old turd, so I would have to agree with LS and say that another Diamond has enterred the ruff.
