Yes, I would appreciate it if you uploaded everything you had.

>let me know which ones your specifically interested in and I can either email them to >you or post them , On approval of The board moderators,

>I have noticed how .....skimpy the D/L area is......It isn't a lack of content made, But >people might waiting to see if Sean makes the arcived fourms files availble.

The files are there, but I have no way of making them available since the links between the forum and the files aren't working. If you are stuck without the mods you have uploaded, I can zip up your folder and email them to you. It doesnt look too likely that the old forums download section is going to be working again.

>Super Chipmunk? you got anything to add?

Id appreciate it if everyone uploaded anything and everything they want to make available.

I may have a very stupid question, but I went to the ftp site to download the files from the 'old' site. I am not sure if what I am doing is right. Only the 'lib' directory has any files, and I downloaded 10 of the 11 files. One (libs.md5) told me I was not authorized.

If the files I have are the correct ones, what do I do next? I was going to just start opening them, but figured one of you kind gentlemen would 'help the newbie'. I just bought SB1 and plan having some tanking flashbacks this weekend. I always like to look at scenarios people have created.

..in other words, you should look in "pub" (for "public") where all user accounts are listed.

Pyro12B

The kicker is when I go into the 'pub' directory, there is nothing shown. I get a blank screen (except for ftp.steelbeasts at the top, and a short cut to go to the next higher directory. The only directory of the 4-5 shown that has anything when I go into it is lib. I don't see any place to enter the username. Do I get an 'idiot' award? What am I missing?

Maybe your browser doesn't fully support FTP; e.g. my Opera doesn't, and in the beginning I was at a loss as well. Instead, I used a dedicated ftp client, and then it worked just fine. Which browser do you use?

I had the same thing happen with IE 6: just a blank pub directory. Then I tried an FTP client using the username & pw Sean provided and then saw the directory inside pub (which is where the files are).

As I am still struggling with my browser for the *.scr files ? or try to educate people ? :casstet:

Hell_Hound
05-29-2003, 05:29 PM
Educating takes too long.

Let's just round up the seven people in the world who use .scr and execute them for trying to make us download another unpacking utility. Civilization was clicking along just fine with .zip format.

Sean
05-29-2003, 05:33 PM
Jayman is referring to the fact that some browsers will maul the .sce files as they download them and make them unusable.

JayMan
05-29-2003, 05:43 PM

Hell_Hound

Looks like there is a lot of work to be done. Even though all the downloads work in IE6, about 60% of them don't work in Netscape/mozilla due to
1. .sce file extensions
2. A older version of the downloads uploaded files differently, these can't be downloaded in mozilla; all you get is a file not found error.

Who wants to volunteer to fix them all? :-)

Hell_Hound
05-29-2003, 07:09 PM
I can pull down all the .sce files, .zip them and put them back up, if that's all that's required.

This lunch is busy (going to city hall to pick up marriage license :D ) but I could start tonight or tomorrow.

I wouldn't know how to correct the Mozilla problem.

Sean
05-29-2003, 07:12 PM
Ill work on it when i get home from work. Im not sure if it will be that easy.

All thats left now is the T's.

Then I have to go back and look for any remaining stray .sce files.

All the old workarounds should no longer be neccessary.

Hey Sean...

I know I can easily submit a News article by clicking on Resources and Submit News. But is there an easy way to find and browse previous articles by subject heading?

Perhaps adding a drop down under the News link that is something like this?

>News
>>Current
>>Submit New
>>Rule the World
>>TGIF
>>Battle Labs
>>Fulda Gap
>>Virtual Units
>>Multi-Player
>>Maps
>>etc. etc.

Right now if I hunt about I can sometimes figure out how to search the archives, but it would be nice to have a user friendly interface to browse them like we can in the forums now.

Thanks,

~mm

Sean?

Sean
01-22-2004, 04:42 AM
Hi,

I used to have a sideblock that did something like this, and stats showed that absolutely no one used it. So it was deleted to improve page loading time. If there is something you are looking for, you can always use the search function :-) If there was a compelling need to have easy access to old news postings, I'd put it back. However, in light of the database troubles we have been having lately, I would hesitate to add new blocks until we are sure everything is working smoothly.

mapman
01-22-2004, 05:16 AM
Hmmm...perhaps you can put a link to the News Search Function under the News link so at least it is intuative.

Sean
01-22-2004, 06:22 AM
Why is it intuitive to replicate the search link? If you do that there, then I should also add seperate search functions (which all do the same thing) to downloads and weblinks, etc. too. Search searches the whole site, and you can even search by the categories you mentioned. Theres also a search box at the top left corner of the screen on the pncamo theme. I think adding more buttons which do the exact same thing is just going to add more clutter to an already full menu.

mapman
01-22-2004, 08:52 AM
Well....we have

>Recources
>>Search
>>Articles
>>Submit News

If I go to search, News Articles is not presented as an option.

I remember when I could go to the News Section, click on a topic icon (Multi-player, Maps, Virtual Units, Fulda Gap etc.) and search or browse those.

Perhaps just changing the nomanclature (Spelling?) would fix that.

You ask for feedback on the site from time to time...I just offered it, because I always have a difficult time figuring out where to go to find previous new articles that I have seen in the past.

It is not intuative for me and I am fairly tech/web savy.

But then you said nobody used it before either....maybe they didn't/don't know it is there.

I deffer to your webmaster wisdom oh wise rodent....

Does PNphpBB2 (type that three times fast) support an "ignore" feature of any kind, so that if, hypothetically speaking, some slobbering dumbbell were to appear on the forum, I could click a couple things and never see his/her posts again?

Just thinking ahead to the SB2 release, when that scenario might become a bit less hypothetical.

One idea is having a selectable "threaded" mode in which you would have to actually click on each individual post to read it. That way if there was a trolls name next to a post you could just skip it and move on to the next.

I'm having problems with lag here. SB.com is the only web sight where I have this problem. Most web pages will load in a few seconds whether in cache or not. My log on and other times are as follows:

Time to load SB.com: 40 seconds
Log in time: 20-30 seconds
Forum access: 20 seconds
Topic access: 20 seconds
Access to comment: 20 seconds:
Submit Reply time: 60 seconds or more
Log out time: 30 seconds to maybe never.

These are Netscape times. Double the above times for Internet Explorer.
The Camo theme is back to showing double names for users. An example follows:

Bluewings[/b], ')">Bluewings

With the Camo theme I loose the quick reply option at the bottom of a page.
Other themes don’t do this. But using other themes don’t allow me to see Edit, Quote, or Delete Buttons with each post.

SB.com times have always been slow, but it's worse now after the latest changes. I've tried every think I know to over come these problems including tweaking Netscape and MSIE. Plus other settings. Is anyone else experiencing these problems?

TK.. I use the Cameo Green settings, and yes, I see the double names, but have gotten used to it.. And the "quote" in that theme is located (for me) in the upper right corner of whomever I want to quote, and next to "quote" is the "edit" in my own post.. upper right corner.

However, I'm now in the PNT theme, no double names, and the "quote" is now located in the very bottom right of each persons thread.. to quote.

And to Edit, that too, in PNT is next to the "quote" "edit" located now in the lower right hand corner of my post..

Going back to Cameo Green now.. lol
