Anybody go? If not here is an awesome link to the introduction of Playstation 3 and quite a few kickass demos that they intro during the conference. This video is over an hour long and showcases what the future of gaming and what future computers will be capable of. I think after the 1st 20 minutes it's quite fascinating. If only SB2 would be renderred like some of these demos.

[E3-2005,] Anybody go?

No, I watched and read a little about E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), mostly after the fact, but wasn’t very interested in what I came across. G4¹ is too action game centric and so much of the focus was on franchise titles on next generation systems. Contemporary consoles have amazing graphics and I just don’t have the need for what’s better than what can currently be produced. I’m not saying I don’t value esthetics, I enjoy games all-the-more for their beauty, I’m saying an overemphasis on beauty makes a game appear shallow to me.

Talking with people about E3 also turned me off to the expo. Debate over next generation console hardware tells me little about the enjoyment I’ll derive from playing a game on a given system.

If only SB2² would be renderred like some of these demos.

I myself would be the last person to complain about a sim looking as good as its optimum potential, the more a simulation looks like the real thing the better, but Steel Beasts Pro Personal Edition (SB Pro PE) looks really impressive to me. Lighting and shadow aside, while there may be room for improvement in the eyes of some, such a distinction would be lost on me. The art direction for the Steel Beasts 2 graphics engine³ seems to have led the project away from the soft focus appearance of some of its peers. Its graphics appear crisp as if you could reach out and touch the objects onscreen and your hand would meet a tangible surface.

Thanks for the gamespot link listed above. when the pessimistic fatigue wears off, and it will, I’ll go check out what coverage I’ve missed.

¹an American videogame television channel that I believe stands for, “For Gamers.”
²I’ve presumed you were referring to SB Pro PE as the details for what SB 2 will look like are unknown.
³I have used the phrase “Steel Beasts 2 graphic engine” to generally mean the engine that is being used for both SB Pro PE and that will then be modified for Steel Beasts 2.

^ Oh I'm not making ANNNNNNYYYY complaints about SB or the devs, because I've been a rabid fan of this game for 4 years now(I just don't post much).

I HIGGGHHHHHHLY recommend watching this vid. It shows what the gaming standard is going to be in the near future. The Vid is actually 2HOURS(!) long and it shows som truly amazing graphics in addition to specific detail on the hardware of the PS3 and what Nvidia&Sony have been up to.
For example:
According to the bigwigs at Sony&Nvidia the ps3 will have the graphics processing power of 2!!!!!!6800ultras, be Blu-Ray capable, have 3 Gigabit buses with ~40gb transfer rate/per second, the "Cell" that runs all this is 53(!!!!!) times faster than the Athelon FX-55, on an on and on.

I am no computer genius, but I can't refute those numbers if they stand true, but make your own decision and watch the game trailers for UNREAL and several of the new gameing companies that are set to release.

My Favorite were KILLZONE, Vision Gran Turismo, and several others that I forget their names.
You won't be disappointed by the vid, just crack a beer, and sit back but be sure to set it down before the trailers start or you'll find yourself spewing beer all over the screen when you see the shaders, lighting, and particle effects in motion.

I believe I misinterpreted what you were commenting on. I originally took the statement to represent a broad and overall dissatisfaction with the up coming SB Pro PE but it wasn’t meant that way at all, was it? You may have been specifically commenting on the processes that regard the image on screen in a certain light. I apologize if I misrepresented what you had to say. This isn’t something I know very much about.

I think it’s completely appropriate to critique something one values enough to spend one’s time doing and I don’t think that by doing so it would make someone any less of a fan. However, I know what you’re say, with so much to enjoy about Steel Beasts why harp on the little things.

My Favorite were KILLZONE, Vision Gran Turismo…

The Killzone sequel looked incredible but that had to be prerendered. The footage of Vision Gran Turismo was really impressive to watch, it got me excited but as of Gran Turismo 4 my short list of criticisms include adjustments to the physics engine not the graphics engine.

…spewing beer all over the screen when you see the shaders, lighting, and particle effects in motion.

Your enthusiasm is contagious, I’ll have to watch the streaming video soon.

about Killzone. it wasn't prerendered, it was really rendered realtime by hardware. but the game won't look (or play) like that. they've been doing the demo from the beginning of the year. everything is scripted. i mean everything. every soldiers animation is different, there are no physics (everything are scripts). .... but it's rendered realtime.

This is why you should goto E3:

That’s amazing. It was a really cool sequence to watch, it was almost more of a film short than a technology demonstration. I only had a chance to play the first Killzone’s demo, on the PS2, and not the full game. I thought, of what little I saw, that the level design was of high quality. It’s not a game I’m likely to buy but it should be interesting to see what the developers can do with the series in its second iteration.

This is why you should goto E3.

Those are nice shots. First page, second column, second row.
