Curious if I'm in the minority here. I'd like to see the Guard/Defend/Hold behavior tweaked, and here's why:

My normal routine pulling into a BP is to drive in using the F8 view, pick out a nice spot, hit E, jump into the gunner's seat and do the initial scan as the tank settles into position. That way I can reposition if the BP isn't as good as I first thought, or handle the gunnery and back off if I'm immediately spotted.

What I'd like to do next is switch the tactics to Guard, plot a retreat route from the tank and go do something else. But I can't do that because unless there's a checkpoint associated with the tank, it'll immediately follow the route. So if I want Guard behavior I have to create a checkpoint, tell the tank to go to it and then scoot the checkpoint under where the tank is already. It's a nuisance and takes a bit too long.

What if setting a unit to Guard/Defend/Hold caused them to stay put, allowing you to plot a route from them that they wouldn't follow unless their retreat logic called for it, or unless you gave the Proceed command? Seems to me this would make unit control a bit easier.

Better to have prepared BPs with attached routes handy to drag to potential spots. Alternatively, just make checkpoints that you can drag to potential BP sites, set a route to them and while the unit is on the way create the retreat route from the position and set the BP orders (defend/hold/guard). Leaving a unit alone on a stand alone BP will usually get it killed because it won't bug out when under fire.

When I'm really good, and trying real hard to do it right (not everytime), I take a lot of time in the planning phase to do a thorough map recon. I use the LOS function to find what I can see and where the dead space is. Then actually jump on the map and look around. I put Check Points and BPs on or to cover the key terrain. Sprinkled all over the place. That way you don't have to worry about it during the game. Its already there. And it just a good idea in general to know the terrain before you fight on it.
