...
Yep, pick Leopard 2-A-4 tanks.. 1 Co Leo tank, and 3 Leo tanks per plantoon..
OR.. once you have learned how to use the SB Mission Editor, you can create such platoons for the M1 tanks, changing the current attachements: 1 Co tank, 1 Xo tank, 4 tanks per platoon, to what the Euro Armys use as mentioned above..
Good hunting..

The M1A1 (American) tank platoon has 4 tanks in each. All others have 3 . . . I think.

In SB yes, but in real life, no.
French tanks are rolling by 4, and are much closer to the Leo2a4 than to the M1A1. But wa can't have a real 4 tank platoon composed of Leo2a4.

The german army has changed to 4 vehicle platoons in 2002/ 2003. In Tank and Panzergrenadier battalions. Would be a nice feature for SB2 too...
Also the Jaguar is no longer in service, it´s role as a long range tank destroyer is to be taken over by the Tiger Helicopter.

You can always create an M1 platoon, split it in two sections, and convert them to Leopard platoons. However, you must not merge them, or else one tank will magically disappear. We're going to address this issue in 2006, and make all kinds of force structures more flexible. Well, that's the plan.
After several attempts, I still cant get a platoon with 4 tanks. It only works with the M1. I have tried to create an m1 platoon and then change it to a leo platoon, but it still is only three. The closest I get is to create an m1 platoon, split it, and then change it to leopard. But then i cant control all 4 tanks at the same time.

Most of the time, in game, you would want to not move units in plt formation.

That's a matter of personal preference, which I happen to disagree with.
I know, I'm in a minority.

3star is the master at making whole platoons disappear in front of you and reappear in your rear.
Been there, he did that, I lost my T-shirt !

3S, you and Elf should get to talking tactics.

Whats the downside to movement of a platoon? Too exposed with everyone moving together?

Let me just say this, last time I saw three tanks in plt formation together, I managed to nail them all at 1000m BSG with out being engaged by them. It is best to spit your units up to avoid being engaged and destroyed by one lone tank.
I like platoon movement becouse you have more control. 4 tanks can see better than 2. The minor downside is that you are more exposed. What i would like is to be able to move with a whole platoon, and then be able to split them up in two sections if you need to.

The human eye is the best detection device. The AI in the sim isn’t all that competent to spot human gunners. You are better off splitting the units up and doing a hasty occupation of a BP
“1. Hasty occupation of a BP (also used for occupying SBF or ABF positions)
a. Stop at rear of position, establish security
b. Once all tanks set, move into BP, remain turret down.
c. Commander and PLs quickly discuss the following:
-Engagement area
-Sectors of fire/observation
-TRPs,
-Fire distribution guidance
-Engagement criteria
-Disengagement criteria
d. Vehicles move to hull down, TCs brief gunners on sectors
e. Individual vehicles back down when complete
f. PL notifies CO when PLT is set
g. Improvement continue as in deliberate BP occupation

#1) Split your Platoon into 2 sections
#2) Leave the 1st section hidden on back slope
#3) Split your section into 2 Tanks
#4) post the lone Tank on overwatch to cover you
#5) drive forward your Tank and engage .
Loose a Tank , replace it and repeat the process . This is SteelBeasts Tactic , not real life Tactic .
Cheers . :3starSK:

...which means that we have to make computer controlled units more effective, I guess. Applying real-life tactics should be rewarded by success in any simulation.
Sigh... more work.

Re the AI, normally what works is keeping them away from each other and giving them keyhole shots. That or if you out number the enemy 3-1, then rushing them forward does a number on the op for. But that is a great way to attrit your own force. Normally, if you can, keep the AI from doing something that you can do, it reduces the risk of losing units due to neurotic actions by the AI (like staying in an ICM drop because the AI is shooting at inf, ignoring the tank 500m away in favor of coaxing the inf that is 4000m away, etc). The AI is truly something that needs work. You can do real life tactics, but only if you have every tank human controlled. Normally real life tactics need to be modified for use in MP in SB.

I tend to move as the situation permits. If there is a distance to be closed where the end point is best occupied by a big force in a hurry... you bet I am moving everything in as big a formation as possible.
On the other hand sometimes smaller unit tactics are called for. Even so, no unit is an island (unless it's about to die) and all units, even if 'split' off from their mother units, are married to every other friendly unit on either side.

4 and a command tank is U.S. standard
DrDevice
12-07-2005, 03:00 PM
Uh...no. The U.S. standard is a 4-tank platoon, not 4+1. We haven't had a 5-tank platoon in a looong time.
Tank 1 - Platoon Leader
Tank 2 - TC - PL Wingman
Tank 3 - TC - PSG Wingman
Tank 4 - Platoon Sergeant
