It's also good when you are outnumbered, or if you dont have the likelihood of stopping the enemy cold with a linear defense, especially if he is more skilled than you.
A defense in depth consist mainly of a system of interlocking fileds of fire with very few units exposed, coupled with preplanned ambushes and area counter attacks, where you want to draw the enemy in along predictable routes, then get flank and ass shots on him, as well as off tempo attacks, after he thinks he has safely penetrated an area.
Sometimes, you know you cant hold a BP, since you dont know where he is gonna come from, so you cant deploy all your units in one area, but still, you position a tank or brad along an avenue of approach he may come through. Then the trick is taking more of the enemy down with you before you die.
So ok, the enemy has attacked your spread defense, has massed in one area and acheived what he thinks is a breakthrough, but it isnt, because all along his route you have units stationed in hide spots waitng for the enemy to expose himself along the course of his advance.
So we keep infantry close to where tanks must pass, and units hidden in spots that give us Keyhole shots on the enemies flanks, the point being to bog down and attrit an enemy advance to the point he either sustains too many losses, or we cause him to advance so cautiously he loses any momontum he has and his attack bogs down, giving us time to move other assets from other parts of the battlefield to where they can be of use, bringing LOS to bear against the enemy.
The thing about a defense in depth is, it must be manned, as opposed to a linear defense, where the AI can get a few kills for you. In a defense in depth, you must really be on top of your units, especialy because they will not automatically engage from their hide spots always, and often while include a short pursuit of a passing target. In a defense in depth we want to use the concept of channeling, that is to say, forcing the enemy to take a particular route, so that our waiting guns can fire on enemy targets.
The true goal of a defense in depth is to set up a counter attack, as we dont want to let him penetrate our positons and then just leave him there after he bogs down.
We must have a force standing by to counterattack, and push him back from where he just came.Timing and tempo are key in a counterattack.Launched to soon, it will be defeated, launched to late, he has time to recoup and organize his own hasty defense.Ideaaly is launched after he has sustained what we believe are his greatest losses, when he is weakest, and before he regroups.counterattack should come from a flank, as opposed to a regular assault, and wont have as many units involved as a full attack.
In a defense in depth, we seek to let the tanks advance and become seperated from their scouts and supporting infantry, then hunt them down and kill them in a series of seperate engagements. this requires a lot of attention to enemy movements, but particularly the ability to get inside the enemies decision cycle and attack before intel is stale .arty can be particulary useful,as far as channelizing the enemy into preplanned killing zones
We seek to channelize the enemy also with fires from individual units , into an area where we can do some real killing.Inf is vital, if present. So is the ability to react to intel in a timely fashion, before he moves and we go on wild goose chases.
