Not having seen the movie, only the pictures at VG's linked site, it looks to be either a T-55M or a T-62M. This is clear from the coax and sight aperatures on either side of the gun tube. Also the TC's searchlight is on the left of the turret, if it were a T-72 or a T-80, the TC's searchlight would be on the right side of the turret.

Greetings, have looked at all the "Flash" images and there are two that clearly show the fume extractor at the end of the barrel. ....T-55 series.

All for now ..... 9erRed ..... out

Being a old 007 fan, I think I remember it as a T-55 mocked up to appear close to a T-80BV

I didn't see this movie, so please excuse my ignorance. Is the Pegasus statue riding along on top of the tank? And, how on earth can you see the track in these pictures? How do you know they are chieftain tracks?

The Pegasus statue lands there after a crash with the monument. The socket is blown to pieces from the impact, the statue falls down on top of the turret.

The tanks comes to stop on one or two occasions, in a frontal shot. You can see the track pattern fairly well. Track patterns are not unique like fingerprints, but they do vary a lot. I didn't identify them as Chieftain tracks, but I do believe in Stuart's expertise on this matter.

There was a 'making of Goldeneye' programme on a while ago that gave an overview of the T55 used. Dont know why they changed the tracks, i can only assume that either they gave better track mileage, or the fact that they can carry rubber pads didnt bugger up the road surface, which on numerous takes i suppose may have been a problem. Wish i had some photos of it, it would be interesting to see how they got the drive sprocket to fit. Incidentally get the dvd of Band of brothers. Interesting footage of an fv432 getting converting into a jagdpanzer....

Ssnake i appreciate the vote of confidence, but the last thing i would do is trust im my expertise ;)

I can not see a fume extractor at all on the gun (but maby whit a better program to enlarge u can) so i put my vote on a T-54 cuz of that...

I was absolutely certain the story was somewhere here on the site. I looked for it, but couldn't find it.

From what I remember of it, the director wanted the tank driven at about 60mph for some 'good cornering shots'. The stunt specialist said that, whilst the tank may go 60mph, it would merely continue in a straight line at any attempt to corner. So, they fitted Chieftain running gear, with rubber tread blocks. They also put lots of oil down and filmed the tank sliding about on it, as if on a turn.

My Russians not that clever.... but from what I can make of the narration the author is refering to the locations used in the particular chase scene with the Tank, on Location around the streets of St.Petersberg and a film set created at a disused Airfield in England.

The Author then makes some reference... that if your the sort of person that has a T-55 Tank covered in (Grease) Paper and stored or buried at the bottom of your Garden, then this material is for you.... :exclam:

There is also in the cinematograph scenes on the map a pretty good Side view showing the Drive train and Five dirty great Road wheels with small Drive Sprocket reminisent of the T-55, if I knew how to I'd post some comparison images.

Ah that explains it, thanks for clearing that up James.

I have a suspicion that it was a t55, but the barrel had some cladding on it to hide the fume extractor and make it look more like a 125mm, but i concede that it may be a t54. (its not always easy to tell, at least for me!)However i dont recall seeing the dome shaped extractor fan on the roof, which would definately tie it to one. To be honest, T54s in the west are relatively rare, most of what we have in the uk appear to be 55s.

Rockape do you have a link to those pictures, ive a friend who is a chieftain nut who would be very interested.

Sorry! Stuart666
I don't have a link that shows the actual film modded Tank, I actually snagged a copy from the site provided by VegasGeorge, if you wait for the page to fully d/l there is a Map and image veiwer which, when you "mouse over" Tank icons shows further screen shots one of which is a three quater rear view, though some what fuzzy, does show the running gear,

But here is a Link to a site that shows the T-55 in all its many guises maybe find what your looking for there.

There is a Budge/Perkins/FFG upgrade model shown on this page also.... ;)

These pictures were made in Buharest or Budapest or another city of Eastern Europe, but only not St.Petersburg
