Either I'm too stupid, or something doesn't work. Do I have to upload the file from a web site, or from a local drive (instructions seem to indicate a web site).
OK, specified a URL, still no go for my GIFs. :casstet:
Go here:
http://www.steelbeasts.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=Avatar_Upload&file=index
Choose browse and pick the file off of your computer.
It will be uploaded. Then goto my account and choose your avatar. It should show up from then on in the forums.
Img size should be 66x64 for the avatar.
A new version of avatar upload will force this size.

Why so small? 80x80 doesn't look too big.
I dont know. If its easy to change, I will.

Ugh... that explains a lot. I thought you allowed 100x100 / 10K max size.
66 is a pretty harsh restriction IMO, what I want barely fits into the 100 pixel limit if it is supposed to contain legible text. File size hardly exceeds 1K btw...

I'd second any motion to leave the size at 100x100 - it becomes quite difficult to get any decent-looking image into a 60x60 area. My avatar is 2.3kB and would be smaller if I had a utility for reducing the palette.
Thanks for doing this, Sean...now I can scrap my bulky .sig graphic and we can all save wear and tear on our mouse wheels. : D

When I try to upload my avatar i get this message "You must specify a valid email address for yourself"!
I have specified my REAL email adress at my account! The avatar is 64 x 64 pixels, GIF, 3,6kb. What am I doing wrong???
Ssnake

I think what the message really wants to say is that you must specify a web address for the upload, and not a path to your local harddrive.

Well, dang it - if I try to upload from my local harddrive, it tells me that I must specify a valid email address. If I crossload it from a different web domain, I get the response that it is an unspecified file type or does not meet the size restrictions.

I thought i had it down to 108x86 and just under 5 kb. Not sure why it was accepted. If you want i will try to drop it down some more.

Just to make sure we are all on the same page:
1. Hit upload avatar in far right menu, choose up to 100x100 GIF file @ up to 18k size.
Choose .gif for the file type.
.jpgs are for a user picture in the profile. THIS WILL NOT BE SELECTABLE AS A AVATAR
The .jpg file will show up as a picture in your user profile. You can see it by clicking on your name in the member list from the menu on the left.
2. Once pic is uploaded, chose my account on the menu at left.
3. Choose change your info menu item.
4. goto user avatar, scroll down to your name.gif.
5. goto the forum, any posts you have made should now have your avatar in it.

All of you, who have white background around your avatar, please make it transparent!!! And now when we have avatars, do we really need to put pictures in the signature area where they take up message-space? http://www.plauder-smilies.com/rodent.gif%20

How to make a color transparent in a pic with psp 7?
:casstet:
Cpt_Grogg
11-05-2002, 05:18 PM
Try this in PSP. Take the ”dropper” and right-click on the color to get it as background-color. In the menu select Colors/Set Palette Transparency and then choose "set the transparency value to the current background-color". Select Color/View_Palette_Trans to check if its done. Save as gif.

I don't have a program that will edit .gif's
It took my .png file and changed it into a .gif

Will you allow the upload of .png files ????
NO. :casstet:
We have two people that can't get it work at all, and now here we are haggling over file types. Its hard coded into the modules what file types its going to accept and what type is going to go where. Why is it so difficult to accept the limitations of what is already there and make the best of it? On top of all that, png is one of the least used filetypes on the web. Please make the effort of loading it up in a editor and changing it. Paint will save GIF files, and it comes with all version of windows. MS Office (some versions of it) comes with ms photodraw, which is a decent editor. If all else fails, email it to me and ill do it myself. The same thing goes for all of you having trouble with the avatars, just email me the image and I'll put it on the server for you in the correct directory so you can use it.
