Not a sim, dude. Top down, turn based (IGO-UGO) hex-mapped strategy game. Good fun, but most definitely not a sim.

Basically its Steel Panthers II upgraded to run with Windows XP instead of DOS or Win 98.
Its also not as complex / realistic as "Armoured Task Force" or "The Star and the Crescent".
As others have mentioned a good game but not a Sim in the same league as SB pro PE (or at least so the leaked video etc suggest anyway). I guess when the Manual is posted (end of this week was the planned date) we will get a better idea.
But the basic version of it is "free" apart from whatever it costs you to download it.

Steel Panthers 1 and 2 were the sh*t back in their days. Steel Panthers World at War, and winSPMBT are great examples of what a community can do to mod older games to run on current software and hardware while improving upon the game mechanics at the same time. I have them both and I'm glad I can play them on my WinXP rig. Nothing gay about them at all!

SBMBT is great fun and it does actually teach the player something about real tactcis, even though it is a bit simplistic in some aspects. The morale, digging in etc forces the player to effectively gather their forces an assault in a deliberate way to be succesfull. Also, it is great fun to see a multitude of nations implemented in great detail, complete with all kinds of vehicles, units etc all with the correct organization and all in different time spans from the end of WW2 to 2020

The game is old, but it is the best of it's kind, imo. If you are into turn-based hex-field strategy, this is a must. Incredible immersion, for this type of game. i play it on a regular basis since long.
The CD version offers a map editor and resolutions beyond 800x600. The free download (works like a charm!) stops at that resolution. Game-wise there are no differences or cutoffs.
The game has been under constant developement and upgrading since many years. quite a dedicated team behind it.
A true classic. There is also a comparable game, focussing on WWII.

I forgot, this should help:

WinSPMBT actually is version 4.0. Until 3.0, previously posted on that site, it was DOS, but nevertheless worked reliable. Unfortunately the manual vor 3.0 is gine, too. If someone is interested, I could search and look, if I still have it somewhere.
ATF is a complete different thing, and I really hated it for it'S inferior interface and many restrictions that I saw no reason in (or maybe did not understand.) One should not compare these two, their focus and approaches are to different.

i like the SSI/Avalon hill games. i have the actual board games of Panzer Leader, Panzer General, Axis & Allies, Origins of WW2, Rise and Decline of the 3rd Riech, a couple civil war versions, and the Arab/Isreali Wars with the new tiles for GW1(m1,M2,113,T72 etc) i also like to play civil war generals2 for the pc. i rather play tile/hex based games on my table

I just realised that I mixed up ATF with BCT (Brigade Combat Team) in my posting above. ATF I do not know. Can it be recommended?

BCT was first and that evolved into ATF. Now the ATF engine is used as the basis for the Korea, Fauklands and Middle East versions.

Sounds good, I'll check it out. I hope there is no longer this 1-shot-per-minute-only restriction that killed my nerves so mercylessly in BCT!? I also found it difficult to built situational, that means environemtal awareness from the height line maps in BCT. While I got the general idea of the the shaping of the world surface, it was not good enough to raise that mental image to a degree that it was of use to actualy decide were to hide my tanks or put them hull-down. I also have nor real-life- experience with the military. Is the level of complexity and needed background knowledge of a kind that an outsider could handle it and use it for good use?

Well in AFT you can have the map displayed in three modes:
Colour (where shading reflects height)
Contour (where you use standard contours)
Colour over Contour (where you get both plus the shading used by many armies to generate an IPB (Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace)).
Its “top down” so I’m afraid you aren’t going to see the trees and lay of the land that you can see from a SB cupola. Also its not at that detail, you don’t move your tank forward or back a few metres to achieve hull down, you tell the tank platoon to adopt a defensive position and the AI does it for you as you move on to give the next platoon / troop its orders.
The manual is detailed and it took a while for me to convert from Aust terminology to US but it wouldn’t be hard for a non military person to pick up.
I’m pretty sure there are demos for the whole family at:

Yes, I got the demo this afternoon. The interface looked very much like BCT. But I haven't dived deep into it so far. Map looked a little bit better then in BCT. I am used t read maps, but those light lines on black background from BCT were a liittle bit too little back then. i lost tanks as soon as I moved them.
Does anyone know why back then it was thought to be a good thing that tabnks are allowed only one shot per minute? It was this detail that finally made me kicking BCT. I mean if I were a force commander and see my units beeing under concentrated fire and they are shooting back at that rate inly, their commanders immediately after battle would find new resppnesebilities - in the kitchen (if they survive). I asked that at their forum back then, and they told me that this is how things were in reality, an answer so unbelievable and stupid that I really became angry about it. I thought Proctor became angry for the simple fact that I questioned this aspect of his baby. ATF was still in the making back then, I think.

Try looking at the wargaming forum at Strategy Zone Online. They have a sub-forum dedicated to POA2 where the beta testers post.

Armored Task Force. hehe I was a beta tester for that game. Good concept, good game, but mainly for those who are into tactics and not fighting. I also have their BCT, Brigade Combat Team, which is basically same thing as ATF. Again that is mainly for tactics, not fighting. I play it occasionally, but not much. Steel Panthers II rocked in my opinion. Not as good as SB but it had its merits, and still play it to this day. And it wasnt brig gen proctor, hes a captain in FA, at time I was beta testing he was with the 25th ID in Hawaii
