Hello steelfreaks

in the video where you can see the tow-shot from external, the target gets hit at mission time 1:06. And at mission time 1:11 you can hear a explosion!

Is the sound travel time simulated or have i drunk to much beer??? :D

I wish every one a nice christmas!!! Have a good time!!!!

PS: Nils, vielen Dank für die Karte!!!

That's not new. That happens in SB1 as well. Also works the other way, by the time you hear the report of an enemy cannon shooting at you, the round has either hit you or gone past. I've not measued the time/distance ratio, but I don't see why it wouldn't be accurate.

Yes it is. You hear the initial explosion of the ammo depending on the distance you are from the target. And if the destroyed vehicle burns for some time before it blows up, you will see the turret launch followed by the sound seconds later. That aslo applys for the sounds of artillery and small arms ammo. You can hear the sounds of bullets zipping by your head or smacking against your vehicle long before you hear the sounds of the weapon firing at you.

Yes... we've always taken the speed of sound into consideration. Not really difficult, actually - any game developer could do it. Might be a bit more difficult in a movie if you can't do the explosion completely virtual, but then again they always show explosions up close anyway.

Movie laws...

Maybe somebody should write a tutorial on using flash-to-bang time for estimating distance with sound-ranging.

Speed of sound at sea level = ~340 meters/second.
Delay of sound in video = 5 seconds
.'. Range to target in video = ~1700 meters

I don't know alot of people that would have the presence of mind to start counting (One-one-thousand, Two-one-thousand) as soon as they hear a sabot fly by their turret.

Usually if someone misses you, they are either far away or a bad shot. In both cases, start jinking and get the hell out of there.

 i did not know about, but anyway, i think its great!!!!

BTW: It would be very nice to have this in Silent Hunter 3, i love this sim, but to hear the explosion when the torpedo hit the target 1500 meters away is just uncool

@ 3Star: would it be possible to make a video, where we can see something from the inside the bradley???

Greetings

http://www.magnumland.com/Downloads/sand_storm.zip has an (admittedly short) sequence inside the bradley..

Given the majesty of The_List, we may one day get an 'expert' difficulty level where one cannot depend on the F5 screen for locating and determining the grid of spotted threat units. One day we might even get useful dismounts that can set OP/LP's. Calling arty under those conditions will require a completely new skill set. Jinking tanks then might be just enough to raise up a dust cloud or throw track.

maybe we will get implementation of sound targets someday....

Hm, yes ... but a submarine is submerged in water, and the speed of sound in water is much, much higher (3km/s ?), so the time gap is much less obvious. Of course, you might not hear it while on the bridge, but if you observe with the periscope while submerged...

There is a mod for it somewhere around Sh3 site. search for it and you will find it, cant remember what its called but its a damn obvius name atleast.

Talking about graphics ... Check that

I certainly do not want to bash SB ~ I love it too much~ but when you witness stuff like this , you certainly ask yourself "If only SB2 could be that good ...

Some talk about Doom3 or Half-Life2 , but this is going far beyond anything I have seen so far . To be perfectly honest , SB is miles beh... (sorry) light years behind . It is easy to say that SB is a very small Team ~and it is true~ but Silent Hunter III as only 4 real programers , the rest is working on sound , historical datas and on the campaign engine .

Keep in mind that those screenshots are from the stock game . I still have to install all the beautifull mods made by the SHIII comunity .

Now , take a minute and look at the textures , reflections , etc , and especialy the Sea water mapping

Btw , it was in Mid Atlantic , 2000 nm North-West of Ireland by a beautifull quiet night the 22nd June 1942 . 2 hrs later , I met a convoy of 24 Ships escorted by no less than a British Battlegroup . It was a fierce battle and I sank two 10.000 tons Tankers , a C2 Class Cargo ship as well as a Clemson Class Destroyer before to be chased away by the rest of the escort ... 8)

A cookie to the one who reconize the Constellation on the screenshot
It is so accurate that you can sail by the Stars :o

And the Sim did cost me 35 bucks 3 months ago ...

Really Al and Nils , get yourselves 2 more good programers . And don 't tell me that you haven 't got any money to pay them with all the copies of SBPro sold to the militaries . I know ...

Cheers . :3starSK:
