View Full Version : Ranging without LRF?

OK guys, I need a little refresher course.
When it comes to tank gunnery I understand how to lase and engage targets in normal mode. I understand how to do the same in the backup mode without stabilization. And I understand how to range tanks with the M1 GAS.

Heres what I need to know:
When using the M1 GAS the numbers match fairly well for T-72's and T-80's, How do these values or the use of the sight change when ranging APC's?

When using the GPS in the M1, how do I tell the range of a target without the use of the LRF? Does it work the same for the Leopard's GPS, GAS, and Peri?

Kinda sucks when playing a multiplayer game, and my answer to my gunners question "How do I tell range without the laser" is 'Uh, well, I kinda forgot...Guess and check?'...

From the FAQ page:

* How are you to aim the gun sights with the gps out like on the auxilary sight it has a bunch of numbers for distance but how can you put it to good use?
Answer: In decreasing order of formality and precision: 1. Take the target's height in meters, multiply by 1000 and divide by the apparent height in mils to get the range in meters. Each tank's reticle has the lines a certain number of mils apart to help you do this. 2. On the M1A1, use the height guides on top of the GAS. Find the lines that your target just barely fits between, and read the range (in hundreds of meters) off the top. 3. For any intermediate-range target, use the 1500m mark. If the target looks big in the reticle, aim low; if it looks small, aim high. 4. Train your eye to recognize what targets look like a various ranges. Whatever method you use, especially if the target is stationary, you should use successively-halved adjustments to get onto target - so if you used one of the above methods and estimated 2200m, you might try this: Fire at 2200 - round is short. Add 800m to get a new estimate of 3000. Fire at 3000 - round is over. Cut 800 in half to get 400 - drop 400 to get a new estimate of 2600. Fire at 2600 - round is over. Cut 400 in half to get 200 - drop 200 to get a new estimate of 2400. Fire at 2400 - target. I pulled the 800m number out of the air - you could use anything - but I recommend that inside 2000m you use an initial correction of 400 and beyond that an initial correction of 800. That might sound big, but you want to "bracket" your target as soon as possible by getting one round short and one round long, so you can start "splitting the difference" to get onto target. Making dainty little 100m corrections generally doesn't pay off.

My suggestion:

Practice.

Do it enough and you can tell the range of any vehicle just by looking at it.

Keep that up, SCUD and we'll call you "Eagle Eye!" ;)

I don't think that is a title I'm in any hurry to earn.

I'm just saying that FMs and Tutorials are great, but NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING, can replace simply practicing it yourself.

Easy fix Hans.....turn up "Panzerlied" in the background and SING LOUDLY as you March across the battlefield like Major Hessler firing as you maneuver. Sooner or later, you will hit the target if the enemy doesn't decide to maneuver into a killing position on you first. Estimate range to target and fire. The LRF is nice to have but prone to failure. Remember, if the enemy PC maneuvers into the fog...then your done for! : )

Panzers vorwhert!!If I go over on my first shot after I laze I usually just use my Mk1 eyeball and aim a little lower.Might miss again but I reckon the enemy crew would be a bit shaken up.Hell I am when I get near missed.
