What a bizarre question... Would you care to elaborate a little bit? I am somewhat confused.

I think he is after a patch so that you can play the game without the CD.

Now given that you don’t need the CD to play Steel Beasts (once it is installed of course) and that SB pro PE will use this dongle anyway, it does seem a weird question.

I didn't realize one could play Steel Beasts without a CD! I"m so used to putting a CD in the tray when I play any game that I didn't even think of it. Oh,well, thanks for the help gentlemen. You pointed me in the right direction.

I only have the demo of Sb1 so the no cd crack is sorta pointless as it already runs without cd.Gotta steal the credit card off my missus one day.

I have the german version of SB Gold. The CD is copy protected and you need to put it in in order to play. For me, itīs a pain in the a**, because i would like to just double click the icon and play. I hate software piracy, without it, we would be able to play a "quick" game.

Yankee you tried uploading the old patches, that worked for me to get the game to run without the CD. Try install both old patches, don't know where you can find them though.

I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting a No CD crack for a game.

I have them for most of the games I play regularly. Why?

I have well over 300 CDs spread across 3 different rooms. (I really ought to get some CD booklets) I don't like to spend 15 minutes looking for the CD to a game which took 2 GB of my harddisk space on a full install.

WK..

I think I know exactly where you're coming from, as it took me some 6 months, (2000) and by mistake only, to find out that I could play SB1 without the CD in the tray.. Funny shit happens.. lol

Add to that, many many hints of things one can do during game-play, that unless I semi-complained, went unknown to me, along with a good laugh from those that never quite figured out my bad gameplay for so long..

Confessions, good food to lighten the soul/load.. hehehe

Not a bad idea IMO to spend 16 bucks for a SB1 CD, along with, who knows, with large gatherings in TS, who knows if a 3 or 4 company battle with 8 players per side won't bring back the older SB1 cannons?

I know it will stay in my PC along with Pro..

Thatīs EXACTLY the same problem that I have, too much CDīs and no booklets :D
As long as i own a legal copy of a game, i donīt feel guilty using a no-cd patch. Thatīs the main reason i voted for a dongle protection for SB. :)

And now my confession to the Board:

Hello guys, my name is Yankee66 and I am not only a Sim-a-holic [tears swell in my eyes], but I also (oh my god, how should i say it?)...sniff...

I always BUY the games i like. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM [falls back on chair and cries]

Sniff... now itīs out and i hope that you guys can bear with that. Sometimes i get emotional...

Flyboy, have you looked on Ebay, I've just done a search in the UK and there are 18 copies for sale, one guy will even ship outside the UK for Ģ2.99, but I'm sure there must be some available on Ebay in Australia,

Took me forever to figure out I didn't need the cd too. In fact wasn't until someone mentioned it under the dongle/copyright protection post, lol.

I usually put all my cd's in a binder and use a marker to write the serial code right on the cd. All my cases get boxed up and put in the closet. Cuts down on the space when you get a 40, 100, or 200 cd case.

......now where did I put that case?!

why spend 16 when in near future SB1 wont be played anymore??????

#1 not everyone will buy Pro Pe
#2 it maybe hard to get more than 16 players in a Pro Pe game
#3 some people will want to play a lite game, something quik.
#4 SB is still not a bad sim

#2 it maybe hard to get more than 16 players in a Pro Pe game

Especially considering the fact that Pro PE does not support more than 8 players.

SB Gold does perform a CD check. That's slow and tedious.
The solution is to install the 1.195 to 1.266 patch (for the non-gold edition), and then re-route the shortcut so that it points at tanksim.exe.

Cheers

Just for the record,I bought my SB with Manual on EBay for $12,so I am legit! I'm sorry that I generated so much discussion, pro and con, about using a NoCD crack. As long as you have purchased the CD I can see no harm in wanting to play without using it,which gives one a ready-made coffee-cup coaster, right? Interesting points of view, though.
A further question, please.I am a newby (as though you didn't know!) to SB,and have upgraded to vs1.22 and added various Mods, and intend playing offline for the time being unil I feel confident. However, nowhere can I find anything that tells me HOW to actually play the game. Yes,I've gone through the Manual,I've read the AFK info, looked at many posts regarding Tactics, etc, but if,as a newby,I want to go and get my feet wet in battle, what procedure do I follow? There doesn't appear to be a real Tutorial of simple steps to follow in order to get into action. Remember,as a newby,I don't know Armor Doctrine,or complex Unit positioning,or any of that stuff,so if you can help.I would much appreciate it.Even the Map terrifies me right now! I do know how to Lase and shoot, though! :(

That's the problem - and the attraction - of tactics. Anything that works is a legitimate solution. There are some rules of thumb, called "doctrine", which promise a success more often on average, but ultimately it all boils down to the following questions: What am I supposed to achieve? What do I have at my disposal to achieve this goal? What are the enemy's suspected intentions? Where am I strongest and the enemy weakest? How can I bring my strengthes into play to defeat the enemy trying to accomplish his own goals?
Whenever you're about to play a scenario, answer these questions before starting to develop a battle plan. You will need to memorize the strengthes and weaknesses of the individual weapon systems, and you will need practice to coordinate the actions of different units.
After completing a scenario, review what happened with the After Action Review tools (the "video player" controls) in the light of the questions above. What worked, and what went wrong? Why did things go wrong? From these observations, draw your cnclusions how you could do better next time.

Steel Beasts, ultimately, is a mind game with a bit of trigger pulling in between. But ultimately it's more complex and more demanding than chess because more variables are influencing the game. The good news is, usually you're up against a brain-dead, stupid, inflexible computer that cannot learn. You can.

If you feel intimidated by the complexity... well, I recommend making yourself familiar with one tank of your choice. Once that you feel confident in its handling, open a few scenarios and play those that put you in command of a small force (one or two platoons).
Alternatively, once that you know how to operate the software, join a multiplayer session and ask for someone to coach you for a while. The lot here is helpful. :)

You just need to apply the 1.226 update that you can download from here (http://www.esimgames.com/Downloads.htm). Then launch the game directly from the tankSim.exe in the release folder.
