Looks like the sequel to Operation Flashpoint has been announced for release in the 1st half of 2006, to be titled "Armed Assault". It will have huge maps and more detailed vehicle models. If they ever get their act together in terms of the armor/gunnery model, Armed Assault could make SB2 superfluous.

Being that it's an FPS, not a sim, I doubt that. I think they will have many areas to improve before SB2 has anything to worry about as far as losing players.

I love OFP. But realism in any area is not its strong suit. They should stick to making it a great infantry model with the things regular grunts might do: drive jeeps/trucks and the like. Tanks, planes and helos are all WAY outside the scope. Until they stop trying to play "jack of all trades" I think they will remain no threat to SB2 in a "crossover" sense. I'm sure the new game will look great and play great...it's just not going to be a tank sim.

I would have to disagree.

Despite how "toned down" SB2 may be (when compared to SB Pro PE), the Esim Team just flat out knows armored warfare. Codemasters can make a good game, but I don't see them being able to match Esim in terms of "overall fidelity" and realism-gameplay balance. Another aspect Esim has going for them is the fact that despite SB2 and the next OFP being "games", people still want some level of realism/simulation. Esim has already proven themselves in this arena.

Esim alreadys "knows" how to make a military simulator. I would imagine making a "game" would be somewhat relaxing (relatively speaking) compared to what they have had to produce thus far. lol

I have, however, always loved the infantry side of the OFP "series". :) It certainly is a lot of fun.

The next few years are gonna be really interesting for all of us game/sim fanatics.

Codemaster didn't make "Operation Flashpoint" or "Armed Assault", there are only the Publishers. And it's not sure that Codemasters published "Armed Assault"

Bohemia Interactive does all the work.

Either way, it doesn't matter, just substitute Codemasters for Bohemia Interactive. ;)

better graphics armor models plz!
1st: no thermal view on tanks in OFP... its pretty hard to detect targets at night as at day!
2nd: tanks are not able to fire at more than 2kms... in fact, it depends on the max distance view your screen is able to display... I was hit by a T-80 I never saw at least 3km away, crewed by AI.
3rd: Tanks always die after the crew. Even in the best tanks (M1A1 in the game, or downloaded ones), you are usually died before your own tank...
4th: not realistic armor at all... i was really surprised to be destroyed by 3 frontal T-55 firing at me, so at my turret frontal armor... In the same way, i need 3 or 4 laws to destroy a T-80 and one extra law for a M1A1...

As a conclusion: OFP is not a tank realistic game at all. Nothing to see with SB1 or 2! This game was designed as an infantry warfare game with large population custommer purpose. SB wanted to aim a gamer fellow tankers elite.

OFP is more recent (I think...could be wrong) and is a 3D-engined FPS. SB1 is not even in the same class, so this is a poor comparison.

OFP has some nice models - but so does every other FPS I know of. They are a dime a dozen. Looks don't mean much to me when realistic use of armor is a complete joke in OFP.

OFP could have been one of the best infantry FPS games of all time, but they wasted developement time trying to do too many things. (I still think it has great features and was a great game)

Unless some major game-design philosophy changes, I don't see the next version as being a simulation any more than the first one.

VBS1 on the other hand, IS one of the best infantry simulations (at least from what I hear.)

http://www.virtualbattlefieldsystems.com/

It is basically a highly modded version of OFP.

The likelyhood is that they will be two very different games, each with their own strengths and weaknesses or focus. Armed Assault will likely have strengths in the infantry area, while SB2 will likely have the better armor model.

I can' t tell you how profoundly disappointed I am that AA is mired in the cold war. The unintreresting, politically correct subject matter may be enough to keep me away.

You know, OPF is also set to the cold war. Thats the theme behind the OFP series of games and addons
