View Full Version : AI unit pathing problems

I am blown away by Pro PE!
But I have noticed a problem that cripples the immersion more often than it should: AI units get stuck on terrain way too easily. I've only played a few real scenarios so far, but in every one of them I have seen AI units get stuck in the undergrowth or on those small desert rocks. This is true even when they are given road waypoints (with the shift key held down).
Is it a problem of map designers making the ground conditions too stringent (easily fixed) or is it something more serious in the code?
The rocks are usually there to block passage through terrain. Even if you attempt to drive them through by hand, you will usually break track pretty quickly. Its really up to the map and scenario developers to decide where to apply the rocks, and how big/dense to make them. NTC is a prime example - many areas are no go terrain for tanks, and thats the way its supposed to be. :-)

However, you can load these scenarios in the mission editor and apply a terrain theme without these small rocks to make them go away. That should help as a workaround if you insist on driving into those areas. I concede that this can be annoying at times.

I understand the role of rocks, but AI vehicles seem to have a habit of driving onto rocks (or into trees) and then getting stuck, or at least stopped. They can't back-up very well, and I frequently see AI vehicles doing a little dance in place until the end of a scenario. The AI suffers too many "mission kills" from poor driving alone.
Another issue: PCs are far too likely to run over their own troops. Just now I saw a Bradley back up under fire and kill three of its infantry. The infantry were behind the Brad because they were trying to load up (as they should). (I'm 99% certain they were not killed by enemy fire.)
This explains why infantry squads shrink during a scenario even before they make contact with the enemy. I'd rather see infantry be immune to being run-over than lose so many of my own troops to bad driving. For simulation purposes, it should be impossible for soldiers loading into their own vehicle to die under its treads.
