I'm new to this sim. I'm still thinking whether I'll buy it or not. Most likely I will. I'm wondering if you could use your mouse only or does it require a joystick, or if you could use them both? Is it better having a joystick or not? Thanks for advice..

I use both, but mostly the joystick.
You don't need a joystick to play, but a good stick really helps IMHO.

I get a better feel with the joystick, not as sensitive as with the mouse .

Mouse. No contest, in my book.
Joysticks (generally) have lousy deadzones, ten miles of sloppy travel, and imprecise directional control. Did I mention how much I hate travel? Anyway... with so many things other than gunning to be done, the joystick is even more of a burden.

Isn'T it possible to get mouse gunning also working in direct input mode, like inTC viewing mode, so that the gun is directly controlled and not the gun tube chasing the cursor - which is the major reason for me not to use the mouse for gunning?
Why has it made the wy it is?

My guess it that you would probably be running out of space on your desk, if your following a target more than a few seconds with your mouse.
If you know what i mean. I would also think it would be more difficult to use the lead, since you need to track the target with speed with no jerkiness of your mouse. and at last the turret dont move as fast as you can move your mouse. like BF2 for instance.
But I prefer a joystick. :)

I know everyone has their preference on what kind of control to use, but as far as dead zones go, I use the Microsoft Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 and I can adjust mine to where there is hardly any dead zone. I can aslo program the extra buttons to do most of the important keyboard buttons. plus traverse the turret as slow as I need to, to track a target.

Tnx guys for the advice. I'll probably use them both. I have x45 but I read some stuff about it not working properly, I might have to get another joystick.

It's a matter of taste. A joystick can help with the immersion, but it's just as well possible to use just a mouse - or both. The X45 works with SB, you just need to change its profile (there is a related thread in the Support forum).

I'm definitely in the joystick camp. Saitek Cyborg here.

Has anyone used the Belkin Nostromo Speedpad? Looks like a very handy device. My 4 year old MS Sidewinder is getting a bit 'sloppy' and I've been looking for something else. I've been long range gunning with the mouse for some time and may make the switch to full time mouser with PE now. I may try one of these speed pads and a mouse.

Cougar HOTAS with RS FSS mod.
NO travel (none, the stick does not move), NO deadzone (stick doesn't move so no deadzone), Perfect precision.

Cougar? Aren't you getting tired after a while applying the pressure? I don't have an FSS mod yet, so I am not sure how many pounds you need to apply.

Saitek Cyborg here.... I also have a Saitek X36 which is very similar to X45 and I didnt find it nearly as good as my Cyborg because of the spring tension of joystick when gunning. Gunning with mouse IMO is a joke. I dont see any benefit whatsoever with it and I have tried to make it work but no luck, very inefficient...then again , its your choice. Whatever flirts your skirt.
