I know this new fourm is just getting started, and that it is having it's teething problems being worked on even now.

I don't want to create or suggest any more work for Sean And in that spirit I want to ask if it would be possible to create a poll or even for people to vote here regarding the whole Avatar/Sig issue.

I propose dumping the very size limited and non-animated friendy Avataars, Not to mention the problems uploading to it.

In it's place I propose a system like the old fourms, with a small amount of personal web space "less than a meg would do nicly IMO." that members can upload pictures, files and/or signature graphics That can be linked to and shared with this coumminity.

Again this is not to cause any problems but possibly help come to a concluision as to the needs/wants of this growing site.

As someone with a poor 56k connection, more like 21k. I'm aware of DL times, and on overly grafftied sites ie:IL2, I do suffer. I'm sure there is a happy medium to be found.

Tell us what you think or if you have any recomdations, This is the Official "Fan" site so lets hear what the fan population wants and can agree on and save poor Sean the time of doing it right the 1st time.......

The personal web space was exactly the main cause for scraping close to the web space limit of the old site. We pruned the discussion threads which made up maybe 20% of the entire web space, but the problem was the many mods which ate up most of the space.

Just so you know why we may be hesitant to actually do it. I would rather not prune the discussion threads in the future since it forces to renew certain discussions over and over again, being somewhat tiresome for everybody except the new members who didn't get the chance to read the outcome of previous discussions.

In the future we may be forced to rely more on links to other fan sites where mods may be located. What we can do is offer a limited time, some sort of mirroring to reduce the traffic burden of other fan sites, but we cannot store all mods for eternity.

Scenarios is a different thing entirely. When compressed they don't need that much space.

Dumping the Avatars? No way! imho ;)

Im sure the problems with the upload will be solved soon, in Sean we trust!

Ah I did not realize that size mattered....cough......

I must of missed that conversation.

Now I better understand the sever size restrictions placed on the Avatars.

Makes sense to me, I'd rather have room for Sce's and Mods than a sight that struggles with "someday" 1000+ members goofy virtual personafacations of their ego.

Looks like I'm off to learn how build a web page............

Well, you don't need a personal homepage, just some web space so you can place URLs. Say, you have a 10 MBytes Geocities or Yahoo account. Then you would just place a link to http:// www. geocities .com/boof/scenarios/Coolscenario.zip. Something like this doesn't require a homepage - just a place where you can make the links to your files public. Like this fan site. Or the one of some virtual unit. Or someone else's homepage. Or, yes indeed, your own.

I think a vote would be a good thing as long as you keep in mind these two points.

1) Creating the voting apparatus shouldn't be labor intensive for the moderators. At least not yet.

2) Whatever the outcome of the voting will be shouldn't be expected to be followed up on right away.

I make these two points because I know the creators of the site are kinda burned up right now and need time to bask in the glory of the current edition of our little cool universe before meddling too much mroe with it.

:) I know you guys get this point already... but I wanted to re-emphasize it.

We had some tool come in here about 2 months ago, suffice it to say he was blatantly trolling. He was publicly warned to develop some social skills or he'd be booted from the forum, and after that I never saw him again.

It's possible he took the warning to heart and went away, but I doubt it...I've always assumed that he did something else obnoxious that I wasn't aware of, and was squished. "Trolls will be eaten" made its debut within a couple days of that event.
