Rumor has it that you can create a night mod for SB PRO. If this is true can you make one? :?:

Yes, perhaps if I was very motivated I would make one, however, 3 things prevent that.

1. Currently I am taking midterms, which will suck up most of my time for the next week or two.

2. Making a night mod for SB would be an incredible amount of work. (My preliminary estimates suggest 100+ man hours for a decent mod.)

3. If I started making a night mod now, I'm worried that eSim might actually have night-time implemented before I was done, or at least before people had time to enjoy such a mod.

When I get some time I"ll do some experimenting and see just how feasable such a mod would be, but in the mean time I'm going to spend my free time making a kickass scenario.

SCUD, there is NO WAY e-Sim will have night implemented soon. Go for it,..Please... :)

Well, I will probably be leaving for training at the end of May.

Which means if you guys want a night mod, I will have to finished it by then (otherwise there will be at least a 9 month delay OSUT+ABN+RIP+RGRBTN+RS)

So what you guys are asking me to do is make a good looking night mod in 3 months WHILE completing college and getting ready for training. Maybe if I slaved day and night on it, I could do it, but I really doubt you would appreciate it enough to make it worth the suffering.

Im hurt Scud, you know I would appreciate it... Most around here dont appreciate much from mod'ders and scenario makers, but we are birds of a feather. Besides, I still have that letter..... just kidding...

Oh, I know you would appreciate it, but short of getting on your knees and sucking me off, I don't think you could show enough appreciation for the amount of work it would take to develop it under such a time crunch.

I've already blown off a week playing SB PPE, I really can't afford to waste much more time on it.

May is coming....and quickly...

I'm sorry I couldn't do more, but time really isn't going to allow for it.

Since I am still waiting on my copy of SBProPE I've been trying to edit the sky textures. Trying to see if I remember how. When I take the edited texture and go into the game the sky color is all messed up. If I can figure out what I am doing wrong I can try my hand at the night mod.
Or if someone can give me some pointers on saving the textures to work that would help alot.

I thought SB Pro PE had night implemented... evidently not.

Night fighting was not something the 'customers' wanted?

Yes. Well, there are several aspects to it; first, night-time combat procedures aren't supposed to be radically different from daylight engagements anyway - except that there is more confusion if someone deviates from procedures. Adherence to procedures can be trained at day just as well however.

Another aspect is exhaustion/tired troops. You cannot "train" being tired, and you don't need to - just like "feeling miserable" or "freezing" or "being hungry". That will come just naturally.

So, ultimately we're down to eye candy, and that shifts it more towards the SB2 spectrum than being a training tool.

Of yourse, my reasoning is a bit exaggerated to illustrate a point - but indeed night combat has not been on top of the list of any of our customers. With the computer screen being responsible for 80% of the information that the user receives about the virtual environment, it doesn't make much sense to make the screen dark to illustrate that it's night (especially if this only leads to people cranking up the gamma correction).

I kinda disagree with you there. Pitch dark also means that participants are restricted to using the TIS. No TIS = Blind. Except if there's illumination nearby...

In my opinion, everything that makes the virtual battlefield more realistic adds to the training value. Dense forests and adverse visibility might be considered eyecandy by some, but like darkness, those are facts that people face in the real environment. It all depends where your priorities are of course.
