View Full Version : Time fuzed 25mm ammo? Kill radius of 25mm HE?

Wasnt there time fuzed ammo for the M242, so that way the gunner could do airbursts?
And what is the kill radius of the HE ammo?
Whenever I shoot HE rounds at infantry the impacts from the HE rounds into the ground look like the same as APFSDS rounds...and even MG rounds for that matter. That is until one of the rounds makes a direct hit on the infantry...then there is an explosion. I would have thought the impacts of HE rounds in the ground would be bigger when there is not direct hit. Is this so? Or are the fuzes not sensative enough to set off the main charge?

Speaking of 25mm HE... Why does it bounce off BMP's? You can kill those with a .50 cal last I checked.
and why do 6 men explode when hitting the end man in a 6man squad? Is this supposed to reflect the nutritional contenet of MRE's?

My info may be out of date (1988-1994) but there is no "time fuze" for the M242 HEI-T ammo. But it would be neat of they did!! LOL Maybe one day we'll see that as a spin off from the OICW development.

It sort of does have a "timed fuze" - you just can't adjust it. The M792 self destructs at roughly 3000m.. At least in the real world. Haven't tested it in SBPPE yet, though.

25mm HE has a 5 M burst radius.

Well, the reason I bring up the question is because I seem to remember in Tom Clancy's Novel "Red Storm Rising" (back in the 80's...a long, long time ago) (maybe it was another novel "Team Yankee" By Harold Coyle Im thinking of) there was an instance of a Bradley using ammo that would airburst giving greater kill radius'. But looking back on my expirience as an M242 gunner in the Navy, Im not sure how that would be possible.

In WW2 the Shermans carried 'graze-fused' ammo for the machine guns, which would explode if it struck a twig or thick grass. The effect on hidden infantry was described as 'pretty horrifying'.
I don't know if they still make those...

Note to self: Tom Clancy is not neccessarily the most reliable source for technical details on military hardware or procedures...
