View Full Version : How are the helicopters?

I was just wondering how realistic behaviour is expected from the helicopters? I'm a flightsim guy and after seeing the video of Hind:s falling from the sky one after another (in the exact same way) after few "aimed" shots with MG gave me the idea to ask this here. Are there any other aviation units in the sim?

No there are no other air assets. From what I understand, the only reason the Hinds were put in is because certain clients asked for them to be in for target practice.

As for their behavior, I've only played enough to encounter them in the troop tutorial of the Bradley so they are not a big threat there. They were fairly easy to knock down, once they came to a hover.

No other aviation units yet.

No SAMs yet.

Currently the AI doesn't jink or fly NOE unless you script those behaviors, so it's possible to see some pretty stupid behavior (and heavy casualties) from the helis.

How easy or hard is it to get them to fire at the enemy?

Can you control the opfor units in the multiplayer like in the first SB? Also the Hind? :D

Hi,

Personally Im not waiting for any air units. Like, lets bring in a few Apaches. Two minutes later after mission start all enemy armour is destroyed. Whats the fun of that? The Hinds for target practice only please. Right now we have plenty of artillery options. Thats enough for me.

Cheers! 8)

When they first appeared in the software , I included 6 of them in my "Border Patrol" scenario and they swiflty took out 2 platoons of Leo2A4s with ATGMs and Rockets .

I took them out as it was unbalancing the scenario .

I haven 't tried since ...

Cheers . :3starSK:

See? Thats what I mean. Air units are no fun.

And adding air units (choppers, A-10, Su25) to SB does also mean you have to add AAA and SAM ect.
Just take a look at Falcon 4.0 and LockOn flight sims. Dev teams of those games are still updating radars, AAA's, SAM's, flightmodels, weapons and so on. All this will take the SB Pro dev team years to develope. I say no air units please. Best is to concentrate on those ground units.

To be perfectly honest , I now use them as "flying Taxis" .

In SP scenarios , I don 't give them ammo of any kind and make them fly somewhere on the battlefield where they "drop" 2 Squads of infantry using the "Spawn" feature . Like the Hueys in Nam ...

Don't expect any realistic flight behavior. Them HINDs are "driving through the air". You can get them to engage targets, but this requires sound tactical placement to allow them to observe the area for a while before opening fire.

HINDs can be a serious danger if the mission designer manages to employ them in a smart way - keep the distance, hide between trees, observe a lot and fire just on occasion.
