View Full Version : Help! My Tank is stuck in the woods

I was just playing Red Decision Point by LtHenkel. I recognize this scen from SB1. I realize that now you can't just drive a tank thru the woods anymore which is good. My problem is with these new terrain maps its very hard to tell where the woods are. Zooming in doesn't show more detail, it just gets bigger and fuzzier. Anyways my tank got stuck in the woods and my frame rate drops to about 4 fps which makes it virtually impossible to manually extract. I liked the old SB maps because with zoom in you could make out the smallest terrain variations. Any chance we can do something about this for SB2. BTW don't mean to whine. SB Pro is everything it was advertised to be and then some!

Can you go to the map and route a retreat route back out?

I tried that. Couldn't get it to back out. Oh well, scenario's done.

If a tank is stuck in the woods an no one is there to see it, is it really stuck?

Ask the driver....

Sometimes it helps to apply a different terrain theme to the scenario. It can be that the scenario still comes with one of the cursed themes that includes small rocks on the ground of forests, and these small rocks seem to create extreme challenges to our computer controlled drivers. With a different terrain theme applied to the scenario, these rocks go away, so the vehicles can still find their way through a forest (but it'll still cost you a lot more time than driving around).
With 4 frames per second in the (external) view however I wonder if the computer wasn't suppering from overload symptoms already. You might get a generally better performance from a faster graphics card (I don't know which one you have, but it doesn't sound like it was even a medium performer...)

Would it possible for someone in the know to post revised versions of the stock scenarios to eliminate this problem? It would be much appreciated!
The most common things are most common ;) Did you check an outside view, maybe the ground is embroidered with rocks. As far as I have seen you cannot pass them if a track moves on to it (noticed in deliberate01 sce) I even had a veh stuck between rocks so it couldn't even turn- driven manually. For some reason later it was with the other forces, the AI must have found the way out :P

I tried the Red Decision Point Autumn scenario. Biggest problem I had was "ghost forests". They don't show up on your map, and they don't show up on the LOS tool. At distance, you'll see straight through them and see the terrain on the other side. As you move closer, the trees will suddenly appear out of a "haze", and ruin the perfectly good battle position you think you saw.
Based on the AAR, AI may appear to be able to see and fire through these "ghost forests". Can't tell for sure based on one single scenario, though.

That blue/gray haze is a big problem ...

I have a Radeon X300 which you have rated "suitable xga". Only when I am in deep woods does it seem to be a problem

Otherwise lowest I have seen the framerate drop to is about 14 fps which seems to be adequate.

112TYR - what graphics card are you using?
foehammer - the list of estimated performance is not authoritative. They're mere estimates of our beta testers - not every single one of these graphics chipsets has been tested (actually it was just a 30% minority), and it's also a question of what you deem as "acceptable performance" anyway. In short, our list can be wrong. It may be a good idea to reduce the screen resolution to see if things change for the better.

Seems like I have ATI Radeon X300/550.
By the way, the ghost forests were gone on the Red Decision Point Winter-scenario. In their place was just open fields.

The Ghost Forest has just appeared. Back up 100 meters, and all I can see is an open field.

The forest is now visible, and my previous field of view is now obstructed.
