For some reason all that smoke pouring out of the hatch makes me think of the tank scene from Buffalo Soldiers :)

Ouch indeed! Is that a recent attack or from one of the two wars?

Unknown at this time. A few M1A1s have been lost to fire in this conflict so far. The halon system is EXCELLENT and so far I believe every America crew has lived to escape safely before the fires get out of control.

I'll take being in an M1A1 in an urban environment over a T-80BK ANY DAY OF THE WEEK AND TWICE ON SUNDAY!

News just says "a powerful bomb" hit the tank - which is pretty vague. No news on the crew.

Here's a small excerpt from what I could find on the story:

Huge flames come out of a U.S. army Abrams battle tank east of Baghdad, Iraq, Friday, March 10, 2006, after a large explosion set fire to it. The U.S. military had no immediate information on the incident and on casualties.

The link is here (http://news.yahoo.com/photo/060310/481/bag10203101055;_ylt=AjKmDwkPSdlR_iBdw7SYV.aB5sEF;_ ylu=X3oDMTBia2Jza2VjBHNlYwNnYWxsZXJ5).

A small caption reads: A U.S. tank burns after it was hit by a roadside bomb in Baghdad March 10, 2006. U.S. troops sealed the area immediately after the blast, residents near the area.

I'd be surprised if they all got out of that, it looks pretty well cooked inside. Probably a hefty home made land mine in the road.

Maybe some concussions or a few broken bones but with the 1 milisecond halon extinguisher they were probably fine.

Yeah, those IEDs are taking a terrible toll.

From Forbes.com - looks like they made it OK........ "A bomb hit a U.S. tank in east Baghdad, setting it afire and blowing off the treads, police said. The American military said the M1A2 Abrams tank hit a roadside bomb and the crew escaped unharmed".

Glad they made it. Looks like a terrible explosion. This again shows how IED's are inflicting a terrible toll. Looks like they had some sort of additional accelerator like diesel fuel or something like that in the bomb.

Abrams crew have been killed by vehicle destruction in Iraq, particularly the tank that had its turret blown 20 yards from the hull. However, from the track, it looks like it was just a large roadside bomb.

Ya those IEDs are a bitch. I sent a buddy of mine(M1 gunner) who was over there a while back a set of 4 small binos so the Loaders in his plt could have so eyes out for IEDs. He said they saved their lives on many occasions because the Insurrgents would dig holes and stack 155mm rounds in topped off with toe-poppers(as detonator) or some other device. The loaders would always spot suspicious things with the binos like that and call up the engineers or just blow in place small(suspected) ieds if there were no civvies around.
