Is there a way you can tell how deep the water when you cross a river, I tried once and I sank.

In the planning phase, if you select LOS from the display toggle, you can left click a point on the map and by hitting F1 go to the world view. You can manuever in the world view using the WASDX keys. This way you can do a pre-mission reconnaisance and inspect water obstacles for fording spots.

Once the game has started, you can use dismounts to gauge the depth of the water and steepness of the banks.
