View Full Version : How about different sounds for the different types of tanks?

I'm kinda sad that every tank is using the same sound effects. I'm not a great programmer - but I think it would be very easy to implement this feature. Any chance we might expect this in the future?

That would be nice! And I also think that the programming part would not be the hard part, but to get the authentic sounds from inside and outside the vehicles! The sounds in SB are mostly excellent, so I would love seeing (hearing) authentic noise from each vehicle (at least the driveables).

LOL, to simulate the sound inside a tank would be impossible and not fun at all :D

Same sounds for all tanks?
Are you saying the M1 sounds like a Leopard and T-80?

They -are- different. :)

Some of the sounds are different for different vehicles, you're right (for example engine idle sound M1 vs. Leos, T-72 vs T-80), but not nearly all... Would love to hear the difference in other areas too!
And maybe some additional sounds too, like the rattle of the tracks or the clanking of the track when making a sharp turn with Leo 2. And the roar of the engine and whistle of the turbos when kicking the throttle-pedal to the floor or the changing of the gears... I could go on for hours...
Nothing of this would propably make a better game, but sure would increase the immersion, just like the sound of the stabilizer's pump when using Beobachten in Leo2 (I had chills when I heard it first time). And most of it would need a real modeling of the driving, which is propably not in the list of things to do for eSim(?).
Maybe some day :)

Ah, an addition to The_List!

What! The_List!? Where is it?!

If your M1s sounds the same like the Leo2s, then you may want to check your installations. :D
The other tanks sound very much the same. However, in battle I am so busy and under tension that I hardly even realize it. Giving the sim individual orchestras for every vehicle type is very very low on my priority list.

I want metal on metal track noise...

I already did mention this one, too, so I like to second Zip on this one. Imo, sounds are very important for the sake of immersion. In this respect, I like to say that Daskal did a very nice job. Especially some of his environmental sound mods are very cool.

the T-80U turbine sounds like a Mig, far from the vacuum cleaner sounding engine of the abrams.

But from the front its very quiet, you only hear the sound from the vehicles rear. I loaned Nils a copy of a Brixmis video with some T80Bs going full tilt cross country. From the side they are also not particularly noisy.
If you had a sound pack for all the vehicles, sooner or later you would have to put in features to simulate the direction you hear the sound from. With a lot of vehicles on screen, that strikes me as a way to get lots of slowdowns.

Sound improvements are on the list. Specifically, the automotive sounds are part of this gradual improvement but the main improvement being a completely new sound engine with EAX support and 3D environments. But the automative aspect definately provides an infinite list of things to improve. The difficulty is always representing the engine / track movement realistically. Primarily it is of considerable difficulty to record a track independent of engine noises, unless you can talk someone into letting a tank roll down a hill in neutral. The other aspect is that the tank is not driver as a car is in a racing game where the user is directly controlling the accelleration. Its speed is controled in "steps" which further complicates things without getting into too much detail.
That said, is it impossible? No it is not... it is somewhere on MY_LIST (tm) of sounds to add. Will every single vehicle have different engine / movement sounds? Not likely unless they are distinctive, but for the ones that are (as Deja mentioned the T-80 for example), yes they will eventually have their own automotive sounds. Right now we have a sort restriction of classification of turbine / diesel / APC / wheeled vehicle class. This will be expanded when the *entire* sound engine is reworked in the future.
