Allright boys, with the arrival of SB Pro a few weeks ago, I decided to restart an old project of mine dating back about 4 years. So I dug out my Atari star wars yoke (http://arcadecontrols.com/images/jude_yoke_profile2.jpg) from storage. The problem is, I don't have a clue where to start, since electrical engineering or programming ain't my forte.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I could reliably interface this to a PC? Any and all thoughts are welcome.

On that same site that hosts the picture there's an howto.

Goto 'controls' then click on 'Jude's StarWars yoke hack', then on the bottom of the right frame: 'hacking a genuine StarWars yoke'

I emailed the fellow who hacked the yoke this way, and he tells me he encountered quite a bit of "spiking" with his design. I will try it out but in the meantime if anyone has other suggestions I'm more than willing to try.

I did do the USB conversion myself (with a spare dual strike pad) and that didn't work too well. The mechanical part of the Atari handles is sound, what I'd like to do is replace the current stuff with high quality potentiometers etc.

Maybe you should use parts from a steering wheel instead of a joystick?

Anyway, keep us updated.

To reduce noise, use shielded wires and try this (short the moving contact to the unused connection) :
