Hackworth recently wrote about the Vee formation :
"I've been reading about WWII German tank "aces" and have noticed many of them using 4 tank platoons in V formations. So, of course, I've been playing around with them like that in PE recently. No conclusions yet, though I feel like I've got more available firepower up front and better protection in general for the platoon. I might change my wedging-ways."
So I tried the Vee formation out a bit with a Leo-plt in the "Platoon Reconnaissance" & "Byto 1" scenario's.
=> SB became a much more pleasant experience as Vee is much easier than Wedge to :
- See your wingmen (without having to look back/sideways).
- See which one fires/is under fire
- See in what direction they fire.
In other words, in situations where I used before Wedge, Vee gives better C&C (Volcano wrote this as well in his TACSOP), and better SA.
In fact, I have the feeling I can handle a platoon better with Vee.
(but of course you cannot use it always)
One thing to be careful though :
Suppose your right wingman is under fire -> you may have the natural relex that the fire comes from the right as well, where that does not always have to be the case.
In RL things may be different and Vee may be less used ?
But in SB, it compensates for the limitations of a PC (e.g. in SB1 the field of view in the unbuttoned position is just 45° instead of a normal human's 140°), and it's even more fun to play now.
I will change my wedging-ways !
