My hats off to ALL you skinners!!! I STILL use good 'ol Viper's winter skins for my Brads and Abrams.

Say... Where is Viper anyway?!!!!!! Anyone heard from him? I hope he keeps up the good work too!

This might turn out to be one of my last skins for SB. I don't know, I've found another sim I really like, and want to work on.

WIP, starting to look right. I never was happy with my origional camo. So I decided to see what my template would look like with Deja's abrams camo mixed in.

Yeah, well I had planned to make a good winter version. And I guess now sence we are on the subject, I'll make it.

Instead of a wild white wash, or fancy winter camo design. I'm trying to get the "snow covered" effect going. After the first WIP, I'm amazed at how easy it is to get it to look real. After all, you just cover all the top surfaces in white. This is what I have so far, got alot left to do.

I think you've got the right concept. I believe it will be a way cool skin. I'm looking forward to it!
In the meantime, this is my latest woodland skin. It is your M1A1, coupled with Dejawolf's default camo pattern. Actually, this is what I wanted when I began tweaking with the skins in the first place... I am thinking about posting it. I have made three versions, 2048, 1024, and 512.

I needed to take a break from the winter skin. So I decided to go back and do some work to the desert version. The color wasn't right. When I was making the skin I guess my eyes were tired from looking at it so much. And I did'nt realize how off it was.

With some photos from taskforce panther, this seems more realistic.

Fabfire
08-31-2006, 04:00 AM
Excellent skins, RogueSnake!

The winter is looking *awesome*, and the desert, yes - you are right on the factual color. Looking really cool!

However, I still like the old color too, not only because it looks (very) nice, but because it matches the other skins I have pretty much well...

Anyway, I have been working with your template, and the last thing I've did was to do a remake of your Woodland 1.0, to use it as my default woodland skin. It was my very first skin download, and it was the one that fired me up to start doing my own.

Well, I've forgotten how good it was. It's a fantastic M1A1 skin. Everything blends ok together, and those beautiful tracks match the camo so nicely... I think that if you find time and inclination to go at it again, it would be the definitive woodland skin for the M1. Sure that's only me, but I really would like to see that one coming... :cool3:

Your work with the M1 is spellbinding - I'm getting out of superlative adjectives here - thank you so much for sharing!

Well when I first started skinning, I hard a hard time. I had the artistic ability, but lacked the understanding of photoshop. I tried and tried to get an understanding of photoshop. But always I would get frustrated.

Then I found a template that a skinner was kindly enough to share. And the minute I loaded it up it was like a light came on in my head. I finaly saw how layers should be used, and how to blend them.

If I had'nt dl'ed that template I would have just gave up.

Thats one of the reasons I did'nt care to share :) The other reason is you love the M1. It would have been a crime not to share it with you :)

CharlieB

The Skins are all awsome and I want to get my hands on them but how do I go about using them in the sim. Would be grateful for help!!!

RogueSnake79
08-31-2006, 09:08 AM
Well, once you've downloaded a skin installing it is pretty simple.
The M1A1 has two files, M1A1.bmp M1Roof.bmp. Some skins don't include the roof file, so don't be surprised if it is missing.

Copy these two files, it they are woodland skins they go here.
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\eSim Games\Steel Beasts\mods\textures\woodland
Notice the other folders to, a folder for each terrain type, woodland, desert, winter.

You'll notice that there is a folder in there titled Red. This folder is for the Red team in the game.

It works like this, if you put a skin in the woodland folder, it will only be use by the Blue team. If you just put it in the red folder inside of the woodland folder, the red team.

This is so if you have a mission were a vehicle (exp. M1A1) is on both teams, you can have them have different skins. That way Red teams M1A1s won't kill Red teams M1A1s. :)

All woodland skins you dl go in the woodland folder, desert, desert folder ect.

Is it possible to have more than one Mod skin in say the woodland folder for the same vehicle type or will this confuse the system?

It's a politically correct camo pattern. When everything else fails, use this camo to scare the hell out of the enemy. After successful employment, just drop the tank into the sea to create a beautiful and colorful environment... :)

I wanted to do the German Leo2a5, but we don't have it yet. Not shure which one to do first, Mybe the 122. Will have to make a template that will do all three, and thats going to be a pain.

Thanks guys :) Too many hours Wicked... too many hours :)
I think I've already found my next project though. Its another tank, and one that really deserves a high resolution texture.

I like your choice!
If you include a German skin its easy to include a skin of the Dutch leo too. Dutch army uses same nato woodland camo scheme. You only need to change the licence plates and change the national markings. :) That would be way cool!

Sounds easy enough :) When I get close to that stage(painting the base color) I'll do it. Gota long way to go first though. Mybe then you can link me to and example photo showing the plates/markings you want.

Last night I fooled around with the fun stuff, the glass. For some reason I think it is anyway. I'll post some more pictures in a few days.

That would be awesome! Sure...when the time is there I show you some pictures of the Dutch Leo2A5.. could be A6. I think we upgraded all but that doesn't matter for the skinning. I understand this will take some time. :) Thanks in advance. :)

Wow - you can really see the difference in tex - and the amount of work that has to go in! Respect to all painters!

My sim is still about a week away - but the repaints are simply amazing just to drool over! :)

Good luck RS79! :)

Well.... this winter Abrams of yours is the MOST realistic skin I've ever seen in Steel Beast - I'm afraid that I will be reluctant to play winter scenarios for at least couple of weeks....

RS,

Both the woodland and the winter are simply awesome.

I haven't been in the field for quite a few years (Hell, I retired 11 years ago) but I can feel the grit and dust.

Best skins I've seen yet.

Thanks again guys. Unfortunately I found some errors in the file I uploaded. I've started correcting them, and will upload a new version "1.5" later today.

For one thing, I put the wrong track texture in the file. I had forgot that I made one in the past, so I made another one that was less accurate. The older track will be included.

Also noticed an error were the markings that say "No Step" on the driver's hatch show through the snow. Will fix that.

Here's a picture of the skin with the correct T156 Cleat track.

One more thing: what about a new track for the Woodland 2.0? It came out without a track...

Ok guys, I've just uploaded 2 new files.

New sounds, a new sound for the Helo, and a new Ambient sound.

Both sould be up sometime this evening. The new Ambient sound replaces the crickets sound. Which was one of my favorites to begin with, but, I like this new one better myself. So download them, and check them out. To hear the new Ambient sound, just jump in a tank and turn the engine off. Birds man! :)

And I paid for these too, about 7 bucks, so atleast try them out :)

Great sounds... thanks RS. The Helo sound would be perfect for a Marine AH-1W or maybe some US Army AH-1S/Q's

Yes I can dream.

I thought this thread died along time ago.. :)

About the footprints, I really wasn't shure how you guys get on the tank. I guess I could have asked lol, did'nt even think too. Anyway, I knew it needed them, and for them to look realistic, so I kinda guessed.

I also knew the M1 had a braided steal cable step hanging from the forward most armor skirt. So I went from there.

I'll take this chance to update you guys on what I have been working on. I've been working on the Leo off and on. And a T-72, and some new sounds.

Buy working on several things at once, it makes it take that much more time before any of them are completed. BUT, I don't get burnt out on a project. So in time I'll have a new skin or 2 for you guys. But being a working man dictates that I can only allocate so much time for skinning.

Just giving you a hard time...

Although the cable loop is on both skirts, there is a hand-grab only on the front left of the tank. The theory is so that you're not standing up and clambering aroud in front of two forward-facing machineguns.

Well, I got bored the other night and decided to update the desert skin. After seeing that video, I could see how much more work it needed. This one will be uploaded in the same spot as the old one monday or tuesday. The overall color is much closer to the real one IMO. Plus it has alot of little updates, that overall make it much better than the current offering I have in the dl section.

Thanks for the kind words guys. Got a question, chan, or no chan. I liked the idea, but now that I added it it kinda makes the tank look like it's smilling. And we can't have that :)

Also, which track? The one in this image, or the one in the first. One represents what a track looks like after a few mile's on the highway, and the other in the sand.

The solution of various versions is OK, even that if it makes the download bigger.
Anyway, if I had to choose, I'd opt for no chain, and the first track... I like it this way better. :)

Looks very cool fabfire :)

I don't plan on doing a brad for sometime, mybe someday. I just takes so long to do a 1 off skin in high resolution (especially for me, becuse I work a full time job) that I have to really think about what I choose to work on. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to do one, but my main intrest continues to be the heavy tanks of the worlds armies.

The next new one will be a Leo2A5.

Hummm... Next to go is the Leo2A5... Just great! I've been dreaming about this ubertemplate since you've first mentioned it. But could you consider doing another M1 before that - an update on the woodland - built on this much improved template? There are so many cool details and additions you've made in this Desert one... :red:

This new desert skin is a dream come true... It's a joy to see this one in action!

Thanks so much for sharing!

Well, I included the blank skin for you fabfire. I though, ahh, I throw in a blank one so he can do his thing with markings or whatever. :) I'm really glad you like it fab, I like it too :) Its really what I wanted way back when I first started the template. And when I get the mg and turrent roof completed I will be completely happy with it. I've needed to get these done for the longest time.

I see. As you must have imagined, I'm already messing up with it... I asked because... Well, I just had to ask. Anyway, I'll mess around with your blank one... Let's see what comes out of it. :clin:

I do understand when you say you're happy with the result - as it is awesome in the fullest sense of the word - and I'll keep waiting to the final result.

And the Leo2A5... :)
