View Full Version : Thoughts on TC spotting

Not many thoughts, actually, but lots of questions.
How does the SB engine determine if the TC (or gunner) has spotted a target? I could imagine it being based on a bunch of line-of-sight calculations to determine how much of the spotter's sight cone is occupied by target (which sounds like it would burn a lot of clock cycles), on some inverse-square relationship with a constant out front based on the number of bushes and trees in a "corridor" between spotter and target, or any number of other things.
I find the TC is inhumanly good at spotting stationary hull-down green tanks in green trees at 3200 meters. He's so good at it that you couldn't pay me to fight my tank from the TC position; I need the gunner's TIS if I'm going to have comparable spotting capability.
This isn't a complaint so much as a thinking-out-loud, and I'm curious if others concur.

HH.. actually, I have been told and have experienced much the opposite, in that the TC can't spot targets greater than say.. 2800m or more.. and when I have spotted a target in trees at say 3000m or alittle more.. I never get a TC confirmation even when in Gun Position and laze.. I have to chk with map and then make decision to shoot if no friendlys in that area.. and 9.5 times out of 10.. it is an enemy.. unseen by TC.. I could be wrong about this.. but this has been my experience..

:o <-- sex doll smiley
From which view did you spot the 3000m target(s)?
If you say the TC unbuttoned, my next question is, are you using the "hot-pink" skin for the enemy or do you just have waaay better eyes and scanning skills than me?

He did say from the gunner's seat.. Can't really expect TC condirmatin of a target if you're playing the TC now, can you?

I play it the same way LS does, I allways use the TC TI view to look for the targets, adding the capabuility of AI TC for directions I do not scan with the gun. When doing this, I am usually faster than the opposite AI TC, especially when the enemy shows up in my scan direction

Yes HH the spots are from TIS in Gunner Position.. and no confirmation from TC when lazed.. only other way is from Map thru updates.. that you know.. lol
P.S. and I do have Eagle eyes... :hallucine: See.. lol

I assumed he meant he didn't even get TC confirmation after switching to the gunner's seat and engaging. I might be stupid, of course.

Stupid.. NOT.. lol
And yes.. no confirmation, but sometimes, and not sure of distance, but in targets that are in trees, no "cease-fire" after hit/hits.. and only confirmation (of kill) is by Map.. that a dead target shows up.. However, when in open terrian ( even without confrimation from laze) after hit, and if killed target.. I get "cease-fire" from TC at max ranges..
I'm pretty sure about this.. if my memory serves me right.. :(

I find the same...much of the time the first acknowledgement I get during an engagement is "Target" after a hit. After that he's got it figured out and runs
the engagement properly.
My favorite thing about the Joust mission was that without the TIS there was real incentive to fight your tank from the (much-more-immersive-IMHO) TC position. I'd love to see more missions like that, and I guess it wouldn't be hard to arrange...

I consider myself much better than the AI TC, and would never let him spot targets, much less fight my platoon. The TIS is nice, but with some experience at bino scanning, not really necessary, and in fact inferior when it comes to checking your sides and rear. I rarely go into the gunner's seat or GPSE (except as a quick glance there) as I very much prefer the situational awareness you get from the TC's seat.
We have an advantage in SB over real life, in that the tanks always come with a specific color pattern and color shades, and have no underbrush to nestle into or camo netting. With some practice, it's actually surprisingly easy to spot single or few pixels in a screen that seem 'out of place', and a quick zoom in verifies it.
Of course, beyond 3km it gets quite difficult due to the haze stopping your view there ;) but the AI TC is under the same limitations. That's looong range anyway, aside from desert stuff, the average terrain/mission doesn't have a lot at those ranges.

That reminds me - I'd dearly love to see some tank skins that have at least some cam net around the turret. Hull-down tanks would be an absolute nightmare if you could get them onto a crest with some bushes on it. :o

Abwarten. Es muß ja erst mal gemacht werden, bislang ist es ja nur auf der Liste.

LS, reference your sig:
If I remember Tombstone correctly, he calls the guy a "cur", as in vicious dog, rather than a "curd" as in a chunky thing in milk.
Not to say that they aren't both unpleasant things to be called, of course.

Or a Kurd, as in the guys Saddam goes after when he wants to show everyone what a courageous badass he is.
